The First Annual Correcting the Narrative Awards

November 10, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

$40.00

The Community, in partnership with Project RETURN and the Milwaukee Turners, will be hosting the first annual Correcting the Narrative Awards. We will honor 9 unrecognized success stories in the system impacted community. The theme is to celebrate lives and people who are directly or indirectly impacted by the criminal legal system who exemplify the world we want. And each honoree will represent hundreds of others as they receive their customized awards baskets. Special thank you to our sponsors: DreamCORPS Justice, EXPO (Ex-Incarcerated People Organizing), NCMPRBL, Bluecross Blue Shield, and Wisconsin Music Ventures.

Each of the eight honorees has being selected by a different organization involved in reentry, justice reform, or decarceration work in Wisconsin: Partners in Hope, ACLU of Wisconsin Smart Justice Campaign, The Nehemia Center for Urban Leadership Development, the Joseph Project, All of Us or None, Fairshake, Black and Pink: Milwaukee, Wisconsin Community Services. The beloved Tamra Oman will be host and the night will begin with a ceremony by Camille Mays to honor crime survivors and our ancestors. There will be performances by system impacted comedians, spoken word poets, and musicians. There will be work for sale or viewing by currently and formerly incarcerated artists. Catering will be done by Heavens Table Catering and BBQ LLC and Scratch Ice Cream – both were founded and are run by formerly incarcerated people.
