Exploring the Impact of Funding for Unconventional Data Collection on Vulnerable Road User (VRU) Safety Improvements

This project investigates the impact of funding unconventional data collection on the safety improvements for Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs). With the growing adoption of crowdsourced data, recognized for its cost-efficiency in bridging data gaps, this research aims to guide transportation agencies in utilizing such data to enhance VRU safety. The objectives of this study are to: (1) analyze the relationship between funding levels for unconventional data sources and safety outcomes for VRUs; (2) assess how these investments influence decision-making processes within State DOTs and MPOs; (3) explore barriers to data sharing, such as privacy concerns, and understand agencies’ data management practices; and (4) provide policy recommendations based on the findings to optimize the use of unconventional data for improving VRU safety. This project will offer transportation professionals comprehensive insights and practical guidance through literature reviews, surveys, interviews, and case studies, potentially reshaping funding strategies and data utilization for VRU safety enhancements.
