The College Of Health Professions & Sciences offers statistical consultation services to our faculty, staff and graduate students for their research.
Statistical consultation can be provided in all stages of a research project. Researchers request consultation during grant proposal preparation, designing surveys or experiments, selecting software, planning and performing statistical analysis, interpreting the results, writing results sections, preparing for presentations or responding to reviewers.
Statistical services can take on different forms depending upon the researcher’s needs. Collaborative research between the researcher and the statistician can be planned or develop over the span of the research project. Consultation can, therefore, range from a single contact to a regular ongoing process from proposal through publication.
Services for Faculty and Staff
Faculty and staff have full access to statistical consultation services, which include, but are not limited to:
- Assistance with the design of studies and experiments, including the preparation of grant proposals
- Power analysis (determination of sample size)
- Survey design
- Sampling techniques
- Data entry/database set-up recommendations
- Assistance with the choice and application of statistical methods
- Assistance in interpretation and write-up
- Assistance in presentation of results
Services for Graduate Students
Students are provided statistical consultation services for research projects, presentations, theses and dissertations. This is not a tutoring service. Students are assisted in research methodology, design, data entry and analysis, write-up and presentation. It is expected that students will be able to understand, perform and explain their own research analyses. For this reason, students will only be advised through their knowledgebase. For example, students who have not completed a course in multivariate methods will not be advised in such methods, as it is out of their experiences and expertise.
It is recommended that the faculty advisor be present during the first meeting to assure accuracy in research design questions and data representation.

- Power analysis (determination of sample size)
- Survey design
- Sampling techniques
- Data entry/database set-up recommendations
- Assistance with the choice and application of statistical methods based upon student experience
- Assistance in interpretation and write-up
- Assistance in presentation of results
Supported Computer Programs
Most statistical analyses are performed using SPSS, though we also use AMOS, HLM, Power and Precision, and SAS. Other statistical programs can be accommodated as needed.
Cost
Short-term services are provided to faculty free of charge, but if long-term services are needed, fees and/or buyouts will be necessary. Services for students are considered short-term and are free.
Appointments

- A description of your research study
- Copies of any instruments that you are going to use
- A list of what variables you are going to collect
- Your research questions
- Electronic version of your data (if already collected)
- For sample size determination, relevant papers or research study results
