Expanding Students’ Horizons

Studies have shown that study abroad opportunities have long-term impact on a student’s personal, professional, and academic life. It positively influences the career path, worldview, and self-confidence of students. Despite its benefits, first generation and students from groups historically excluded in higher education have been traditionally underrepresented in study abroad. The Study Abroad Diversity Scholarship enables more students from the above populations to participate in these life-changing study abroad opportunities. Below are a few their stories.

I was able to explore South Korea, regularly practice the Korean language, and expand my view of the world. Prior to studying abroad, I was very self-conscious and was weary about speaking out my thoughts and exploring beyond what I found comfortable. My time in South Korea increased my self-confidence by being constantly challenged to speak a language that I was not fluent in. I came back to Milwaukee more motivated than ever before, and this would not have been possible without help from the Study Abroad Diversity Scholarship.

Had it not been for the Diversity Scholarship, I am not too sure if my experience would have become a reality. It alleviated a lot of stress when it came to finances, and it allowed me to focus more on both my studies and enjoying the cultural adventure. It’s easy to look on a map and see the various countries or to talk about the size and number of people on this Earth, but seeing and exploring what is out there really inspired me to continue to do one thing: learn.

I have some takeaways from my experience abroad. The first is that I can do anything that I set my mind to. I was so nervous about going to a country where I knew no one. After studying abroad, I feel like I can do anything. Another takeaway was just how much you can gain from studying abroad. Not only do you get to fully immerse yourself into another culture, but you meet so many amazing people from so many different backgrounds.

Through this scholarship to study abroad, I was able to experience for the first time how it is to be away from home on a study mode. I was able to focus on the purpose of the class rather than worrying about the money spent. Some take aways from the trip were: being able to stay in local residents’ home, that was amazing as I was able to experience a day-to-day activities of the local people. The sightseeing places were amazing and being able to visit some local social agencies, including a jail was definitely priceless!
