Dive into UWM’s Computing Programs

Our computer-focused programs will help you achieve a well-paying career in your chosen field. We also offer an undergraduate certificate in web development and a graduate certificate in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Undergraduate Programs

BS Applied Math and Computer Science

This special degree program is highly technical in nature, yet still offers elements of a classic liberal arts degree. Our curriculum offers courses from applied math and computer science so that you get the benefit of both without having to double major.

The job outlook for individuals with math majors is extremely favorable, as is the job outlook for computer science majors. A student with combined knowledge in both areas is likely to be in high demand on the job market. Plus, a broad world view of cultures, history and society leads to better decision-making in scientific careers, and strong communication skills are valued in every industry.

BS Computer Engineering

A computer engineering degree prepares you to master both computer science and electrical engineering. By blending these two fields, you’ll be able to analyze problems and design solutions related to computer hardware, software, networks and equipment.

With a strong technical understanding of computers and how they function, you’ll be prepared to start your career in a growing field. Career possibilities include embedded system designer, network engineer and telecom software developer.

BA Computer Science

This degree is ideal for someone who wants a strong foundation in computing and the flexibility to apply it in fields like finance, public health, animation and chemistry.

As a computer science BA student, you’ll combine your degree with another major (or two minors) to unlock more career opportunities in your chosen profession. Some examples include researching the impact of genetics for personalized medicine, developing software to manage supply chains and creating inclusive IT products for all types of users.

BS Computer Science

As a computer scientist, you’ll write the software that brings computers to life, including programs for social networks, computer games and data analytics. You’ll learn to develop websites, create applications for mobile devices and understand the theoretical aspects of working with computers.

With your degree, you’ll be sought after for roles as a data scientist, web developer, computer programmer, systems analyst, software engineer, network architect, mobile app developer and more.

Accelerated Program

BS/MS Accelerated Graduate Program

Save time and money with our accelerated graduate program — you could earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in just five years. A master’s in computer science or engineering adds to your skills and can lead to higher-paying jobs and leadership roles.

This fast-track program enables outstanding students to begin their master’s degree in their senior year, “double counting” up to six credits toward their undergraduate and graduate degrees while paying the significantly lower undergraduate tuition rate. Plus, students in this program don’t need to take the GRE exam for admission to graduate school.

Master’s Programs

MS Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are rapidly changing the landscape for computer scientists and engineers, with both being applied across nearly every discipline and industry. To meet that rising need, our program combines artificial intelligence skills with engineering, and is open to students with or without an engineering or computer science bachelor’s degree.

If you’re interested in advancing or changing your career with in-demand skills in an expanding field, you should consider applying: AI and machine learning specialists are among the top three fastest-growing jobs, according to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025.

MS Computer Science

This program is for students who want to develop advanced computing skills that can be applied across a wide range of industries. Whether you’re pursuing research, career growth, higher pay or new opportunities, UWM is the ideal place to deepen your computer science expertise.

We offer two separate tracks: Our “regular track” is designed for students who want to conduct research or earn a future PhD. With a faculty mentor, you will prepare and defend a thesis or do an advanced project. Meanwhile, our “professional track” is designed for working professionals in computer science and other fields. It also welcomes those who got their bachelor’s degree in fields other than computer science.

Doctoral Programs

PhD Biomedical and Health Informatics

Our biomedical and health informatics PhD is the only program of its kind in Wisconsin. Offered in partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin, the program combines medical science with information technology.

When you graduate, you’ll be equipped to use information systems to advance patient care, public health, life sciences research and health professional education. Our graduates are in high demand among health care providers, pharmaceutical companies, medical software companies, public health organizations, insurance companies and academia.

PhD Computer Science

With a PhD in computer science, you’ll discover opportunities in academia as professors, research leaders or peer-level research collaborators. Alternatively, many graduates choose to earn a computer science doctoral degree for career advancement, increased earning potential and enhanced credibility.

The program is designed to be flexible, meeting the needs and interests of each student, while providing competency in state-of-the-art programs. Ultimately, students who pursue a PhD in computer science are passionate about research and solving unique problems that can change the world.
