Doctor of Nursing Practice

With a sturdy foundation of evidence-based practice, students with a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) are fierce advocates for better patient outcomes, quality and safety. With this degree, you’ll be ready for a career as an advanced practice nurse or nurse executive. Plus, the DNP program prepares you for the highest levels of clinical practice. 

BS to DNP

The BS to DNP is a 65-credit program that offers students with a bachelor’s degree in nursing the chance to specialize in one of five tracks in both clinical and non-clinical areas. Courses are a mix of face-to-face, online and hybrid. You’ll choose from one of the following options:  

  • Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner 
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist 
  • Family Nurse Practitioner 
  • Nurse Executive 
  • Psychiatric Mental Health
Post-Master’s DNP

The Post-Master’s DNP is an online, 32-credit program designed for Advanced Practice Nurses (NP, CNS, CNM, CRNA) with a master’s degree. Through the program, you’ll gain new skills in leadership, evidence-based practice, quality, health policy and technology.

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

If you pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing at UWM, you’ll conduct a wide range of cutting-edge research alongside expert faculty mentors. This research-intensive program prepares nurses for roles in research, education, practice, health policy and leadership.  

The PhD in Nursing offers the following program options: 

  • BS to PhD in Nursing 
  • On-campus PhD in Nursing (classes held one day/week) 
  • Online PhD in Nursing

Nurses with a PhD can work as nurse educators, teach at colleges and universities, and conduct research, collect data and present their findings, among other roles.
