Graduate students arrive at UW-Milwaukee eager to make a difference. Some are pursuing questions they first encountered during their undergraduate experience — questions that grew like ripples spreading outward from a drop of water. Others are building on professional experiences or bringing big ambitions for lifting up their communities.
Maybe you’ll use data to help prevent crime. Or study alongside a master musician who takes your performance skills to a new level. You could even work closely with physicists whose Nobel-Prize-winning breakthroughs have helped shed light on the origins of the universe.
Research that creates real-world change. Expert faculty committed to mentorship. Professional opportunities that make waves of impact. Set new expectations at UWM.
UW-Milwaukee students come from all walks of life. What unites them is a willingness to ask big questions and a determination to find the answers. Many work side-by-side with expert faculty on research tackling the world’s toughest challenges. Others collaborate on art that helps us better understand ourselves or partner with community organizations on projects that improve lives.
Here, we turn ideas into ripples of change that create waves of positive impact. Join the next wave.
UWM research fuels our economy, protects our environment and improves lives. And our graduate students play an essential role.
UWM is ranked among the nation’s top 187 research universities by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. We’re one of only two Wisconsin universities to be included in this elite group, often called R1.
Throughout your research, thesis or dissertation work, you’ll learn from and work alongside faculty who are helping redefine their fields. Plus, our instructors are passionate about building strong relationships with students and fueling their success.
Our graduate students grow their professional networks through research projects, field placements and other hands-on coursework. They also gain industry experience at Fortune 500 companies, hospitals, museums, archives and beyond.
From the nation’s first manufacturing-focused AI Co-Innovation Lab to a brand-new, four-story Chemistry Building, our exceptional campus spaces give graduate students the tools to make a splash in their chosen field.

UWM is committed to making valuable master’s and doctoral degrees as affordable as possible. Our support includes:
