Large group of UWM Class of 2023 students gathered outdoors, all wearing bright gold T-shirts with black graphics. They are standing close together, many raising arms or waving, creating a vibrant, unified scene of school spirit.

Established in September 2012 by students, the First-Generation+ Resource Center (FG+RC) is a student fee-funded initiative committed to fostering diversity, equity, and social justice at UWM. As a student-led space, the FG+RC serves as a ‘brave space’—a welcoming environment that actively rejects all forms of bigotry, harassment, and willful ignorance related to race, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, and other identities.

The FG+RC is home to three unique programs:

Our Mission

The First-Generation+ Resource Center (FG+RC) is committed to cultivating an intercultural, equitable climate and learning environment for all UW-Milwaukee members. The FG+RC appreciates diversity and strives for excellence in fostering peer-to-peer connections and critically reflective opportunities through initiatives, experiences, and collaborations. The FG+RC is invested in creating a socially just campus that includes different perspectives, engage in authentic and challenging dialogue, and connect vibrant and global communities.

The goals of our office are as follows:

  • Promote an inclusive campus environment.
  • Remain committed to equity as a guiding principal.
  • Engage students in intercultural exchange to explore the various dimensions of diversity.
  • Provide opportunities to develop the skills required of citizens of global and diverse communities.
  • Decrease the number of bias incidents occurring on campus and within the community of UWM.

UWM operates several different centers to support students in their academic, personal and professional growth, and we aim to enhance students’ knowledge and skills both inside and outside the classroom. UWM is also dedicated to preparing our students to meet workforce demands at the regional, state and global levels. The services provided by these centers play a vital role in helping students deepen their understanding of different perspectives and collaborate more effectively with people from various backgrounds and experiences. The centers regularly collaborate with each other and other campus units to provide exceptional programming and services to students, faculty, staff and the community. The centers and their programs and events are open to all students. Some programs and events may also be open to faculty, staff, and the community.
