UWM Communications and Marketing Orientation Day

Join UWM Marketing, Communications & University Relations staff for a series of sessions on marketing and communications resources and best practices.
Sessions are available in person at the Alumni Fireside Lounge in the UWM Student Union or via Teams. Light breakfast items and beverages will be provided.
9 a.m.-1 p.m.: Branding/Merchandise Table (Kevin O’Connor)
9-9:10 a.m.: Welcome remarks (Liv Hwang, Vice Chancellor of Marketing, Communications & University Relations)
The importance of marketing and communications at UWM, building stronger collaborations across campus and a preview of some changes on the horizon.
9:15-9:35 a.m.: Creating Effective Emails (Becky Lang)
What we’ll be covering:
- What’s the message? Fine tune the writing and message
- Who’s your audience? Identifying who you want to reach
- Why should they open it? All about subject lines and getting action
- What are the rules? Best practices on email design and style
We’ll also walk through the basics of the Emma email platform and how the UWM subaccounts work.
Who should come: Any faculty or staff who email groups regularly and/or already use Emma, or those who’d like to find out more about Emma.
About the presenter: As the Internal Communications Manager, Becky Lang focuses on campuswide faculty, staff and student messages — and coordinating communications to fully reach our campus community.
9:35-9: 50 a.m.: All About Events and Campus Announcements (Becky Lang)
What we’ll be covering: Learn how to promote a campus event and submit an announcement.
Who should come: Faculty and staff who occasionally or regularly have events on campus and/or have news they’d like to share with campus.

10-10:20 a.m.: All About Lockup Logos, Brand Standards & Guidelines (Kelly Grulkowski)
What we’ll be covering: The new UWM lockup logo system and a refresh on brand standards and guidelines
Who should come: For faculty and staff who create marketing materials for UWM.
About the presenter: As Creative Manager at UWM, Kelly Grulkowski‘s areas of expertise are graphic design, marketing and UWM branding.
10:25-10:55 a.m.: Writing for the Web and Channeling UWM’s Voice (Kaitlin Stainbrook)
What we’ll be covering: Best practices for writing for the web, web-writing resources and how to use them, and how to incorporate UWM’s voice and style in your writing.
Who should come: Any faculty and staff in charge of maintaining/updating a UWM website or anyone who writes marketing copy on behalf of their school/college or division.
About the presenter: As the senior marketing writer and editor for Marketing & Communications, Kaitlin Stainbrook writes and oversees marketing copy across UWM top-level pages, marketing campaigns (landing pages, digital ads, etc.) and print pieces.
11-11:45 a.m.: Creating Engaging Social Media Content and Social Media Video Guidelines (Tina Keller and Mary Baylor)
What we’ll be covering: Best practices for producing content for social media and video.
Who should come: Faculty and staff who are social media administrators for a university-sponsored account
About the presenters: Tina Keller is the Director of Digital Marketing and serves as the university’s central resource for digital campaigns and strategies. Her expertise is in paid and organic digital and social media campaigns, content marketing and analytics. Mary Baylor is the Director of Multimedia overseeing UWM’s photo and video teams. Her expertise and passion is visual storytelling and content marketing.
11:50 a.m.-12:20 p.m.: Developments in Enrollment and Academic Program Marketing at UWM (Michelle Johnson)
What we’ll be covering: Get a preview of UWM’s strategic marketing plan. Topics will include: using data in decision making, measuring return on investment and cooperative advertising opportunities.
Who should come: Department chairs and marketing managers for academic units.
About the presenter: Michelle Johnson is UWM’s chief marketing officer with oversight over marketing, licensing and branded merchandise, design, photography and video.
12:25-1 p.m.: For Faculty: Working with The Media (Angelica Duria)
What we’ll be covering:
- University spokesperson vs. researchers/experts
- What makes a good news story?
- How to respond to a media request
- Deadlines and differences between print/radio/TV
- Best interview practices: visual, message, delivery
Who should attend:
- Faculty and staff who will be in contact with the media for interviews or who have been in contact with media because of their expertise
- Faculty and staff considered to be public figures, i.e. department heads, deans, etc.
- Faculty and staff considered to be spokespersons for their department
- Faculty and staff who handle marketing and communications for their department.
About the presenter: As the new Strategic Communications Director, Angelica Duria brings 14 years of broadcast news experience to UWM. Her areas of expertise are media relations, public relations, media training, broadcast news and television.
