These ephemeral pieces, with their bold titles, portraits of actors, and exuberant descriptions of plays, illustrate the dynamic Yiddish theatre tradition in two major centers:&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcollections.nypl.org\/search\/index?filters%5BrootCollection_rootCollectionUUID_s%5D%5B%5D=Yiddish+theater+placards%7C%7Cb7b3a390-c6d1-012f-c2f0-58d385a7bc34&amp;keywords=yiddish+theater+placards&amp;layout=false#\/?scroll=0\">New York and Buenos Aires<\/a>. Together with hundreds of manuscripts, photographs, books, periodicals, and sheet music, they comprise one of the largest Yiddish theatre collections in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cHell and Heaven\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The earliest posters utilize detailed illustrations, such as this one for&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcollections.nypl.org\/items\/510d47da-dc01-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99\">\u201cGehenem un gan-eydn\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;(literally, \u201chell and heaven\u201d) by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.nypl.org\/search\/o24545847\">Abraham Goldfaden<\/a>, starring&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=OrUnfuzhA_cC&amp;pg=PA230&amp;lpg=PA230&amp;dq=morris+finkel+yiddish+actor&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=_FnblT-FZ8&amp;sig=FF6ZD9Zut7wgFG6ddZyDoY2dU9Q&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=FilRVMeBO8eZyAT9kYLQDQ&amp;ved=0CD4Q6AEwBQ#v=onepage&amp;q=morris%20finkel%20yiddish%20actor&amp;f=false\">Morris Finkel<\/a>&nbsp;(pictured), who was also the director and business manager. This \u201cfamous comic opera\u201d of January 8, 1891, at the Romanian Opera House in New York, promises new decorations, costumes and scenery.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.nypl.org\/record=b20477135~S1\">Sheet music<\/a>&nbsp;for a duet from the opera was published in 1897. NYPL Digital Image&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/digitalcollections.nypl.org\/items\/510d47da-db59-a3d9-e040-e00a18064a99\">435096<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Pioneering Prima Donna<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The benefit advertised below was held on Thursday, January 5, 1893 at the Thalia (formerly Bowery) Theatre, a popular early Yiddish venue at 46-48 Bowery, whose gallery is home today to the Jing Fong&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/@40.715653,-73.99651,3a,75y,285.5h,90t\/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sD6p9ZQ0PPMvikPCV7OcOlQ!2e0\">Chinese restaurant<\/a>. The beneficiary,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/jewishencyclopedia.com\/articles\/9227-karp-sofia\">Sophia Karp<\/a>&nbsp;(1859-1904), was&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/jwa.org\/encyclopedia\/article\/yiddish-theater-in-united-states\">probably the first Yiddish actress<\/a>, starting her career at age 16 with&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewish-theatre.com\/visitor\/article_display.aspx?articleID=1773\">Abraham Goldfaden<\/a>&nbsp;and being the first to sing the famous \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/faujsa.fau.edu\/jsa\/discography.php?jsa_num=504112-A\">Eli, eli, lomo azavtoni<\/a>\u201d (later recorded by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/jwa.org\/encyclopedia\/article\/baker-belle\">Belle Baker<\/a>). The brochure\u2019s extremely&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/forward.com\/articles\/127096\/daytshmer-nightshmare\/\">Daytshmerish<\/a>&nbsp;text (a prententious Germanic style of the time meant to convey sophistication) proclaims Karp\u2019s status as a prima donna of the \u201cYiddish-German\u201d theatre of New York and invites audience members to an (unnamed) opera. The text admonishes \u201cappreciators of true art\u2026 not to miss this evening\u2026.which each person can only enjoy once in a lifetime\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDi zilberne hokhtsayt\u201d was based on a popular Russian melodrama,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldcat.org\/title\/russkaia-drama-epokhi-an-ostrovskogo\/oclc\/12093321&amp;referer=brief_results\">Vtorai\ufe20a\ufe21 molodost\u02b9<\/a>&nbsp;[Second Youth] by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=p1-nqxjRgywC&amp;pg=PA139&amp;lpg=PA139&amp;dq=p.m.+nevezhin&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=zt_1CxwRyR&amp;sig=1PaQJw-gA6mYVYxZoVo1fqvk6fs&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=AkRSVKKSGo-kyASBxYKICg&amp;ved=0CCQQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&amp;q=p.m.%20nevezhin&amp;f=false\">P.M. Nevezhin<\/a>&nbsp;and featured&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/thomashefsky.org\/\">Boris Thomashefsky<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/jewishencyclopedia.com\/articles\/9227-karp-sofia\">Sophia Karp<\/a>, the comic&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org\/jsource\/judaica\/ejud_0002_0019_0_19780.html\">Berl Bernstein<\/a>, Madame Epstein, Mr. Conrad, Dora Dubinski and Sabina Weinblatt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cFereynigte Idishe Shoyshpiler Gezelshaft\u201d [United Yiddish Actors\u2019 Society] sponsored this benefit performance on January 30, 1894 for the play\u2019s author\/adapter,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.nypl.org\/search~S1\/?searchtype=a&amp;searcharg=Ter%2C+yaakov&amp;searchscope=1&amp;SORT=D&amp;extended=0&amp;SUBMIT=Search&amp;searchlimits=&amp;searchorigarg=t%7Bu05D3%7D%7Bu05D9%7D%7Bu05D0%7D+%7Bu05D6%7D%7Bu05D9%7D%7Bu05DC%7D%7Bu05D1%7D%7Bu05E2%7D%7Bu05E8%7D%7Bu05E0%7D%7Bu05E2%7D+%7Bu05D4%7D%7Bu05D0%7D%7Bu05DB%7D%7Bu05E6%7D%7Bu05D9%7D%7Bu05D9%7D%7Bu05D8%7D\">Yaakov Ter<\/a>&nbsp;(1850-1935, pictured) who sold tickets at his home at 39-41 Suffolk Street.
