Her research focuses on Yiddish theatre and drama, theatrical travel, artistic networks, and immigrant theatre and performance. Debra\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.debracaplan.com\/publications.html\"><u>writing<\/u><\/a>\u00a0has appeared in\u00a0<em>Theatre Survey, Theatre Journal, Modern Drama, Performance Research, Comparative Drama, New England Theatre Journal, Pakn Treger,<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>American Theatre Magazine.\u00a0<\/em>Her first book,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.umich.edu\/9533320\/yiddish_empire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yiddish Empire: The Vilna Troupe, Jewish Theater<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.umich.edu\/9533320\/yiddish_empire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">, and\u00a0<em>the Art of Itinerancy<\/em><\/a>, was published by the University of Michigan Press in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She received her PhD from Harvard University\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/nelc.fas.harvard.edu\/\"><u>Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in 2013. From 2010\u20132013, Debra was the founding Executive Director of Harvard\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/thschool.fas.harvard.edu\/\"><u>Mellon School of Theater and Performance Research<\/u><\/a>. She is currently a member of the Mellon School\u2019s Advisory Board, and was co-founder of the Digital Yiddish Theatre Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is also a stage director, dramaturg, and translator for the theatre. From 2012\u20132014, she was the season dramaturg for&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.targetmargin.org\/\"><u>Target Margin Theater<\/u><\/a>, working with director David Herskovits to develop&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/09\/04\/target-margin-to-explore-yiddish-theater\/\"><u>two seasons of Yiddish theatre material<\/u><\/a>.
