Near the door stood a telephone booth with a handwritten list of Yiddish actors and their telephone numbers. The walls were covered with portraits of Yiddish stage stars. A bust of playwright\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacob_Gordin\" target=\"_blank\">Jacob Gordin<\/a>\u00a0presided over a giant, old-fashioned radio and an assortment of Yiddish books on low shelves. Old Chanukah decorations hung from the painted tin ceiling. A hodgepodge of vintage tables and chairs, arranged lengthwise, filled most of the hall. Once seated, it was hard to wriggle out from the closely packed tables cluttered with bowls of coleslaw, pickles, and seltzer. Harried waitstaff brought plates of kosher food from the club\u2019s tiny kitchen, and circulated with bottles of liquor. According to YAFAC Vice President&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hywolfe.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hy Wolfe<\/a>, he and other members, including Reyzel Breier, and the late Lena and Irving Glass, used to serve the food themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evening began with welcoming remarks in Yiddish and English, as the organization\u2019s convivial president, Corey (Gedalye) Breier, proclaimed his\u00a0<em>nakhes<\/em>\u00a0at seeing a young person speaking Yiddish and reading the\u00a0<em>Forverts<\/em>. Attendees rose to sing \u201cHatikvah\u201d and \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d (the American flag near the stage had forty-eight stars), as trained, operatic voices rose dramatically above the rest. According to Hy, the Yiddish theatre pianist and music director\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/people\/Renee-Solomon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Renee Solomon<\/a>\u00a0used to play the piano for YAFAC events; today, singer-pianist-bandleader\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitchkahncelebrates.com\/Home.html\">Mitch Kahn<\/a>\u00a0fills this role. Hy also recalls late members like the singer-actor David Carrey (formerly Secretary), and\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/yiddishkayt.org\/view\/spaisman\/\" target=\"_blank\">Zypora Spaisman<\/a>, who ran the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nytf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Folksbiene<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/12\/01\/arts\/music\/claire-barry-half-of-yiddish-singing-duo-dies-at-94-.html\" target=\"_blank\">Claire Barry<\/a>\u00a0of the legendary Barry Sisters, and guests such as\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/01\/25\/nyregion\/joe-franklin-local-talk-show-pioneer-dies-at-88.html\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Franklin from WEVD Radio<\/a>\u00a0and the actor\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0005467\/bio\" target=\"_blank\">Jerry Stiller<\/a>. At 85, YAFAC still provides a friendly and supportive space for Yiddish actors, and for an expanded community of Yiddish theatre enthusiasts. Today, the club meets in a larger rented, wheelchair-accessible space, while the original building sits vacant, the focus of efforts by the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/hebrewactorsfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hebrew Actors Foundation<\/a>\u00a0to secure funding for a renovated and reimagined space. Gone are the beloved actors of the older generation, though their descendants, friends, and fans continue to attend, along with current Yiddish actors and musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/yiddish-stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/562\/2023\/05\/Fyvush-Finkel-YAFAC.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1782\" width=\"477\" height=\"712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/yiddish-stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/562\/2023\/05\/Fyvush-Finkel-YAFAC.webp 600w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/yiddish-stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/562\/2023\/05\/Fyvush-Finkel-YAFAC-201x300.webp 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 477px) 100vw, 477px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fyvush Finkel (1922-2016).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>For Yiddish theatre enthusiasts, the organization\u2019s annual cemetery visit connects the past to the present. Each fall preceding the High Holidays, YAFAC visits the burial plots of the Yiddish Theatrical Alliance in\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mounthebroncemetery.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mount Hebron Cemetery<\/a>\u00a0in Flushing, NY. Here one finds the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mounthebroncemetery.com\/interments\/?page=1&amp;block=67&amp;reference=1&amp;submitsearch=search#results\" target=\"_blank\">graves of Yiddish actors, musicians, writers and stage personnel<\/a>\u2014a veritable Who\u2019s Who of Yiddish theatre in America. Visitors pay tribute to the Yiddish theatre personnel killed in the Holocaust; a cantor chants \u201cEl mole rakhamim\u201d (merciful god\u201d; Hebrew prayer for the soul of the departed) and everyone sings\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/holocaustmusic.ort.org\/places\/ghettos\/vilna\/glikhirsh\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hirsh Glik<\/a>\u2019s partisan hymn \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yFiTUuuwIHc\" target=\"_blank\">Zog nit keyn mol<\/a>.\u201d Stones are placed on graves, and\u00a0<em>bronfn<\/em>\u00a0(liquor) and\u00a0<em>lekekh<\/em>\u00a0(cake) are served.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/yiddish-stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/562\/2023\/05\/Yiddish-theatrical-alliance-toyern.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1783\" width=\"471\" height=\"545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/yiddish-stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/562\/2023\/05\/Yiddish-theatrical-alliance-toyern.webp 600w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/yiddish-stage\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/562\/2023\/05\/Yiddish-theatrical-alliance-toyern-259x300.webp 259w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Gates to the Yiddish Theatrical Alliance at Mt. The first administrators were elected unanimously: Paul Muni: Honorary President,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hymie_Jacobson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hymie Jacobson<\/a>: President, Moyshe (Morris) Nestor: Vice-President,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/yleksikon.blogspot.com\/2015\/12\/dovid-denk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">David Denk<\/a>: Treasurer,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mounthebroncemetery.com\/interment\/?id=143887#details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Max Friedlander<\/a>: Recording Secretary, and a three-person committee of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jta.org\/1957\/05\/15\/archive\/julius-nathanson-yiddish-actor-dies-in-california-at-66\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Julius Nathanson<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mounthebroncemetery.com\/interment\/?id=61266#details\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Max Henig<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0169746\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Samuel H. Most recently, there was a Molly Picon tribute concert that was held in cooperation with the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/yiddishnewyork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Yiddish New York<\/a>\u00a0festival. Guests read Yiddish and English texts from the Workers\u2019 Circle\u2019s\u00a0<em>hagode<\/em>, and sing Yiddish Passover songs together, led by\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cantormoshebear.com\/new-cover-page\" target=\"_blank\">Cantor Moshe Bear<\/a>\u00a0with pianist Alex Rubinstein. A glatt kosher Peysekh-style meal is served. Guest artists perform songs. The community memorializes those killed in the Holocaust and candles are lit by survivors and their descendants as \u201cAni ma\u2019amin\u201d is chanted. In recent years, a gift by the late\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yivo.org\/Nina-Rogow-1922-2016\" target=\"_blank\">Nina Rogow<\/a>\u00a0has sponsored the participation of young Yiddish speakers in the seder to aid in the Yiddish readings.
