Every writer has the right to work with a tutor who…

  1. Is knowledgeable and trained in effective and ethical tutoring practices.
  2. Respects differences including ethnicity, race, gender, age, and beliefs.
  3. Allows writers to make final decisions regarding work and assignments.
  4. Behaves professionally and ethically with writers during their sessions.
  5. Maintains Center policies that promote fair and quality tutoring for all writers including those regarding scheduling, cancellations, space, noise, cleanliness, and sobriety.
  6. Informs the Director or the Assistant Coordinator if a problem arises.

Every tutor has the right to…

  1. Be treated respectfully by writers and fellow staff without regard to differences of ethnicity, race, gender, age, or beliefs.
  2. Be acknowledged as a writing tutor, not an editor, proofreader, translator or instructor.
  3. Work with writers, not for them, and encourage them to think independently, to learn, to improve and produce their own best work.
  4. Expect writers to respect Writing Center policies that promote fair and quality tutoring for all including those regarding punctuality, scheduling, cancellations, space, noise, cleanliness and sobriety.
  5. Be comfortable telling writers, “I don’t know, but I will find out.”
  6. Confer with the Director or Assistant Coordinator regarding writers, assignments or policies, or if a problem arises.
