The U.S. Department of State supports the Critical Languages Scholarship<\/a> (CLS) program, which provides immersive summer study abroad programs of 7-10 weeks for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study languages deemed to have particular strategic importance to the U.S. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals enrolled in a degree-granting program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UWM Grad School will hold an information session for students interested in learning more about the application process on Tuesday, September 22, from 1:00-2:00pm in Mitchell 245. Register for the info session here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designated critical languages taught at UWM:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arabic (applicants must have at least one year of prior study)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinese (applicants must have at least one year of prior study)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japanese (applicants must have at least two years of prior study)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Korean (applicants must have at least one year of prior study)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Portuguese (applicants are not required to have any prior study)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian (applicants must have at least one year of prior study)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other critical languages:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hindi (applicants are not required to have any prior study)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
