SUMMARY:German Movie Night: Beyond the Blue Border
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a very special movie night with a film about friendship\, trust\, and risking one’s life for freedom.\nIt is the summer of 1989 in East Germany (GDR)\, only months before the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War: Andreas has had enough of his violent father and his constant clashes with the political authorities. His best friend Hanna is training to become an olympic swimmer\, but she\, too\, feels more and more trapped within a sports machinery that is under complete control by the state. The teenagers decide to flee to West Germany by swimming 30 miles across the Baltic Sea. The film takes a tender look at their friendship\, their lives in the GDR\, and their harrowing journey to freedom.\nThe film will be shown in German with English subtitles. Prof. May-Chu (UWM German Program) will give a brief introduction to the historical context and the true stories that have inspired this film.\nEveryone is welcome!

SUMMARY:World Languages and Cultures Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Talk by Leah Leone Anderson \nA Translation of His Own? Borges and Virginia Woolf \nOn commission\, Jorge Luis Borges translated A Room of One’s Own into Spanish in 1936 and Orlando in 1937. Both translations had tremendous impacts among Spanish language readers who came to celebrate the feminist rhetoric of the former and the narrative innovations of the latter. Comparative analyses of original and translation reveal that important aspects of these acclaimed features were in fact attenuated by an author/translator whose own narrative style was diametrically opposed to that of Virginia Woolf. \nDr. Leah Leone Anderson is a translator from Spanish and Portuguese and a scholar of Borges\, translation\, feminism and care ethics. Her book Borges’s Creative Infidelities: Translating Joyce\, Woolf and Faulkner was published by Bloomsbury in 2024 and was recently released in paperback. She is a graduate of UWM’s MA in Language\, Literature and Translation program.
