World AIDS Day is an international event dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died with the disease. It is also an opportunity to show support for people living with and affected by HIV. In the U.S., approximately 25 percent of new HIV cases occur among young people between the ages of 13-24. Therefore, it is particularly important for college and university students to make their voices heard and organize efforts to raise HIV awareness on their campuses.
Since 1988, World AIDS Day is recognized on December 1st. The theme this year is Communities Make the Difference.
