Purpose

The Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Mental Health (CACMH) is a standing committee sponsored by the chancellor’s office. The committee is devoted to improving mental health climate and services across campus. It makes recommendations related to current and proposed policies, programming, and practices for the benefit of the mental health of students, faculty, and staff at UWM.

History

CACMH was established in 2011 by Chancellor Michael Lovell. The vision for the committee was to carry out key recommendations of the 2010 Mental Health Task Force. While CACMH has consistently served in an advisory capacity to the chancellor around issues of mental health across campus, the focus has broadened over the years. The CACMH has been tasked with intervening with students at risk, providing suicide prevention education to staff and faculty, promoting networks to create a sense of caring and belonging across campus, developing programming to address stress management for students, and expanding accessibility of high-quality mental health resources.

Much has changed in the landscape of mental health services at UWM since CACMH was created and tasked. Thanks to the efforts of CACMH, there has been substantial progress in mental health service delivery at UWM. Services provided by the Student Health and Wellness Center (SHAW) have expanded to include paid positions in mental health education, creation of case management services, expansion of SHAW staffing, the implementation of the Recognize, Respond and Refer Suicide Prevention programming and service enhancement for identifying students at risk.

There is still much work to be done. Here’s how you can help!
