Indigenous Art as Political Commentary in Ecuador

Over the past generation, the indigenous Kichwa artists of Cotopaxi Province, Ecuador have developed and elaborated a genre of folkloric painting that is uniquely their own. To an outsider’s eye, their paintings seem to depict idyllic pastoral scenes, but when the paintings are interpreted from the artists’ cultural perspective, they communicate critical perspectives on Ecuadorian society.
