College of Letters & Science

Current Faculty or Staff Member

Professor Alexander (Leggy) Arnold is a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry with an interest in the pharmacology of vitamin D and its metabolites. His knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology makes him an internationally renowned academic vitamin D expert. A second research focus of his research laboratory is the development of new treatments for respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD. His laboratory discovered MIDD0301, a clinical asthma drug candidate, which is currently developed by Pantherics Inc, a UWM startup company. Furthermore, Prof. Arnold is interested in new approaches to treat pain by developing non-addictive medications for inflammatory and neuropathic pain. Prof Arnold is also the Director of the Milwaukee Institute for Drug Discovery (MIDD), which is focused on several disease areas with initiatives in neuroscience, cancer, and infectious diseases. Because of the cross-functional nature of drug discovery and development, the MIDD is focused on collaborations among UWM departments, regional and national academic centers, and medical product companies.
