Open Recreation Facilities
Athletic teams have priority Monday through Friday from 6:00am-6:30pm. If the area is unused by Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs or Student Organizations it can be used for the following activities:
- Basketball

- Basketball courts may be designated half court during heavy usage periods
- No hanging on basketball rims
- No informal dunk contests (i.e. not part of a formal program)
- All games to be played using the challenge system
- Football
- Tackling or hitting is not allowed
- Running
- Soccer
- Must be played inside the gym dividers
- Volleyball
- Crank can be rented out at the Information Center (UWM ID will be needed)
- Ultimate Frisbee
- All other activities must be approved by UREC Administrator or Building Manager on duty.
The Engelmann Gym is managed by the department of University Recreation (UREC). University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee courses, leagues, tournaments, and scheduled programs and practices have priority. Open Recreation times are only available for current segregated fee paying UWM students and UREC members. Guest passes will not be allowed in this space.
Field Usage Rules
- All participants entering the facility must have a valid UWM ID or use UWM UREC APP to enter the facility
- SLIDE TACKLING IS NOT ALLOWED (including goalies).
- Field etiquette should be adhered to at all times.
- Soccer is the primary activity that is allowed in this space during open recreation. If there is no interest in soccer, the UREC staff person has the discretion to allow alternate activities appropriate for the space.
- NO Food, Gum, Smoking, Chewing Tobacco, Alcoholic beverages and/or drinks are allowed in the gym. (ONLY WATER IS ALLOWED IN THE GYM)
- Private instruction for personal gain is not allowed.
- No sport activities or bouncing balls in the hallways.
- UREC staff has full authority to ask participants to leave the facility.
*Activities or behavior not covered in the Field Usage Rules will be interpreted at the management’s discretion. In the absence of an Administrative Staff Member, the Building Supervisor will make all interpretations.
Facility Equipment/Attire Regulation
- Turf shoes, indoor shoes and/or tennis shoes are required to play in the facility (NO OUTDOOR CLEATS ALLOWED).
- Goals will be provide by the department.
- Shin guards are not required but recommended. If shin guards are worn, socks must be worn and must completely cover the shin guard.
- Proper attire, according to UREC Attire Policy, required at all times. This includes proper shirts and shorts/pants.

Weight Room Policies:
Shirt, shorts or pants, and close toe shoes required.
All personal belongings must be secured in a locker or placed in the UREC cubbies. UREC is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
- No food, drink, gum, tobacco or anything comparable allowed, except water in a closed container.
- Utilize collars on all free weight bars.
- Re-rack weights and return all equipment to its designated area.
- No chalk of any kind.
- Do not drop barbells, weight plates or weight stacks. Always maintain control while exercising.
- Do not throw medicine balls against the walls.
- Amplified sound is prohibited.
- All Fitness Center equipment must remain in the Fitness center.
- No personal equipment may be brought into or used in the fitness center. Safety equipment (i.e. weight lifting belts, gloves, or wrist straps) is permissible.
- Do not move machines or modify equipment in any way. Use equipment in an intended manner and do not add more than the recommended amount of weight to any piece of weight equipment.
- Do not sit on the machines between sets. Allow others to “work in” on sets.
- Observe a 30-minute time limit on all cardiovascular machines when others are waiting.
- Wipe down equipment, upholstery, and mats after use.
- Only authorized UREC employees are permitted to provide personal training and exercise instruction.
- Photography or filming requires University Recreation Authorization.
- Respect the facility, equipment, and staff. Be courteous and considerate of fellow Fitness Center users.
- Use of unnecessary noises, obscenities, insulting language, swearing, or profanity is prohibited.

Room 104 and 110 are scheduled for UREC Group X Classes, Sport Club practices, Sport & Rec classes, student organizations and other rental groups. Patrons may request to utilize the room when not reserved on a first come first serve basis. The request will need to be done in person at the University Recreation Information Center in the Klotsche Center and Pavilion.
- Must have a minimum of two people to use the space.
- Shirt, shorts or pants, and shoes required.
- No street shoes, must wear clean, non-marking shoes or shoes that are appropriate for activities.
- Individuals with skin infections, open lesions, or open cuts are not allowed.
- If there is blood on the mat or floor, activity must stop. Notify UREC staff member for proper clean-up.
- Any combative activities must be pre-approved in advance and supervised by a current UREC or UWM instructor or an approved coach. Activity approval may not be immediate.
- The in-house audio system may only be used by a properly trained UREC staff person who is participating in the activity. All other participants must provide their own sound equipment.
- Equipment in multipurpose room may only be used by properly trained UREC staff.
- Please report any broken equipment to UREC staff. Broken equipment will be evaluated and may be charged to the proper individual/group at the discretion of UREC administrative staff.
- Activities that could damage the mirrors or ceiling tiles are strictly prohibited (i.e. balls, batons, etc.).
- Personal equipment is not allowed unless pre-approved in advance by UREC administrative staff. Equipment approval may not be immediate.
- UREC guests are not allowed to use these rooms unless accompanied by their sponsor who is a current UREC member.
- No food, drink, gum, tobacco or anything comparable allowed in the room, except water in a clear, plastic, spill-proof container.
- The space reservation must be made at the Information Center in person the day of the activity, no advanced booking will be allowed.
- If others are waiting to use the room, we ask that you limit your activities to one hour.
- Before using the space, please inspect the area and report any broken items to the Building Manager.
- After use, please make sure to return the room to its original condition and inform the UREC Information Center staff that you are finished using the room.
Anyone that violates these rules will be required to meet with UREC Administrative staff.

Functional Fitness Studio Policies:
- Shirt, shorts or pants, and shoes required.
- Bags and personal items not allowed. Lockers and cubbies are available for daily use. UREC is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
- No food, drink, gum, tobacco, or anything comparable allowed, except water in a shatter-resistant, spill-proof container.
- All FFS equipment must remain in the FFS.
- No equipment may be brought in from other areas.
- No powder chalk permitted.
- Respect the facility, equipment and staff. Be courteous and considerate of fellow users.
- Use of unnecessary noises, obscenities, insulting language, swearing, or profanity is prohibited.
- UREC prohibits any group or individual outside the department from delivering personal fitness programs to participants in UREC facilities.
Please help us keep this room tidy and welcoming for all users!
- Store personal belongings in a locker.
- Return the equipment you use to its designated location.
- Allow other users to work in sets with you.
- Wipe down equipment after use with towel and disinfectant spray.
- Report any issues to UREC staff.
- Max of 15 participants in the space at a time.
The above rules are not meant to be exhaustive; UREC reserves the right to prohibit behavior which, in the professional judgment of UREC staff, may place patrons or UREC facilities at risk.
Medical clearance is recommended prior to participation in any fitness program.
To keep the FFS as safe and inviting as possible, the space will be monitored by video surveillance, UREC staff, and users.

- Crank can be rented out at the Information Center (UWM ID will be needed)
- The Pavilion Track can be used when the facility is open.
- The track is intended for jogging/walking use only
- Give right of way to people passing on the track
- Do not jog/walk more than 2 abreast
- The track is not an observation area, standing or blocking lanes is not allowed
- Shoes with spikes are not permitted on either track
- Any additional equipment or activity usage must be cleared through Building Manager on duty.
- Approved eye guards must be worn over eyes at all times.
- Any activity other than racquetball, handball or wallyball must be per-approved by an UREC administrator.
- Not responsible for lost or stolen items left unattended outside racquetball courts.
- The pool may not be used unless a certified lifeguard is present on deck.
- Do not enter the pool if you have a communicable disease or an open cut/wound.
- Do not bring food, drink, gum or tobacco into the pool.
- Shower before entering the pool and after use of toilet facilities.
- Do not run or engage in rough play in the pool area.
- Do not bring animals into the pool area (service animals are allowed).
- Diaper changing on the pool deck is prohibited.
- Glass and breakable items are prohibited in the pool area.
- Proper swim attire required (no cut-offs, gym shorts, or T-shirts unless approved by staff).
- Bathing caps are recommended, but not required.
- No inflatable toys allowed, unless approved by the lifeguard.
- All personal belongings are to be left in lockers.
- No street shoes on deck.
- Encouraged to wear proper foot attire on the pool deck
- No hanging on lane lines or safety lines.
- Lifeguards regulate the diving area and board. Use of the 3-meter board is strictly prohibited.
- One person on the diving board at a time and only one bounce on the diving board.
- No Diving in Shallow End.
- Patrons may not use the diving blocks at any time.
- Use of unnecessary noises, obscenities, insulting language, swearing, or profanity is prohibited.
- Lifeguard has complete authority in and around the pool area.
- University Recreation Administration may revise rules when deemed necessary.
