2022 – Call for Proposals

The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) invites UWM faculty, academic staff, and graduate teaching assistants to submit proposals for the 7th Annual UWM Teaching and Learning Symposium to be held on Thursday, January 13, 2022.

Once again, this year’s symposium will be held virtually. The virtual format will provide an opportunity for even more UWM instructors to participate and to connect with each other in new ways.

Proposal Details

Please submit a proposal to present or discuss any topic related to teaching and student learning in any teaching mode (face-to-face, online, blended/hybrid, synchronous, and flipped). Proposals that explore efforts to improve student learning or the curriculum at the department, program, or college level are of particular interest.

Virtual Sessions

All sessions will be offered through the campus-supported synchronous meeting tool Zoom. CETL will provide technical support to presenters using Zoom, including training and practice sessions and a tip sheet for facilitating within a synchronous virtual environment. Presenters do NOT need to have any prior experience using Zoom to participate.

Session Types

Proposals should identify one of the following two formats:

Interactive Sessions

In Interactive Sessions, facilitators engage with attendees to share pedagogical strategies, course designs, technology tools, curricular innovations, or department/institutional initiatives that support or advance teaching and student learning. Facilitators should plan to interact with attendees in the Zoom virtual session using chat, audio, polls, and/or breakout rooms. All Interactive Sessions are 45 minutes long.

Birds-of-a-Feather

In Birds-of-a-Feather sessions, facilitators lead conversations designed to foster connections around a proposed theme or topic related to teaching and learning to encourage the exchange of ideas, challenges, and resources among participants with the potential for future follow-up contact. Facilitators should plan to engage attendees in the Zoom virtual session using chat, audio, polls, and/or breakout rooms. All Birds-of-a-Feather sessions are 45 minutes long.

Criteria

Proposals will be selected based upon the following criteria:

  • Relevance of the topic to individual instructors or wider institutional initiatives
  • Clarity of session outcomes and the likelihood of achieving them
  • Potential interest to the campus community
  • Effectiveness of proposed interactive engagement strategies
  • Quality of the proposal (clarity, organization, submission timeliness)
