Summer Bridge Program

Summer Bridge is a conditional admission program designed to improve the academic success of incoming freshman whose academic preparation indicates a need for skill strengthening. Students admitted to the Summer Bridge Program begin at UWM during the Summer 2019 term, with classes beginning on June 24, 2019. The Summer Bridge Program offers smaller classes with excellent instructors and individualized academic advising, all of which will help you start working towards the college major of your choice and transition to full admission with the right resources at hand.

Summer Bridge Coursework
Courses completed for the Summer Bridge Program will satisfy course and credit requirements for any of UWM’s degree plans, putting you on the path towards graduation. You will be enrolled in the appropriate Math and English course for a maximum of 8 credit hours during the eight-week summer session. College math requirements vary by intended major. Students will be placed in the appropriate math pathway for their intended major.

The Summer Bridge Program takes place Monday – Thursday from 9:00 am – 3:30 pm. Students will have a 45 minute break mid-day for lunch. Attendance every day of Summer Bridge is critical to successfully completing the program and continuing as an admitted student in fall.

Conditions of Admission
In order to continue enrollment at UWM in Fall 2019, you need to complete the following steps:

  • Review and electronically submit your Summer Bridge Agreement by April 1, 2019.
  • Submit either a $150 Confirmation Deposit or have completed and submitted deferral paperwork by May 1, 2019.
  • Attend the required Bridge Orientation on May 18, 2019.
  • Successfully complete the 8-week Summer Bridge Program beginning June 24th and ending August 16.

Failure to complete these steps and successfully complete the Summer Bridge program will result in academic dismissal from UWM for the Fall 2019 term.

Program Costs
Please note that these rates are based on Summer 2018 and may change slightly. Students who participate in the Summer Bridge Program are responsible for the following:

Tuition and Fees for 6-9 Credits:

  • $2380 for Wisconsin residents
  • $3360 for students with Minnesota reciprocity
  • $3390 for Midwest Student Exchange Program students
  • $5200 for non-residents

UWM will provide a scholarship of $1,000 to support some of your summer tuition expenses.
You are required to submit either a $150 Confirmation Deposit or have completed and submitted deferral paperwork by May 1, 2019.

Financial Aid
We strongly encourage Summer Bridge students to submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This is the first step to determining if you’re eligible for state and federal financial aid.

Students hoping to qualify for financial aid to pay for the Summer Bridge Program must complete two FAFSA applications:

  1. For Summer 2019, use the 2018-2019 FAFSA.
  2. For Fall 2019/Spring 2020, use the 2019-2020 FAFSA.

The Financial Aid Office is available to answer any questions and can assist you with completing the necessary paperwork.  We encourage you to complete the FAFSA application as soon as possible. Funds are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Summer Bridge Housing
University Housing is available but not required during Summer Bridge.

  • You must complete the Summer Housing Contract by April 1st to secure a spot in University Housing during your summer program. A Summer Housing Contract does not guarantee Fall Housing, you must sign two contracts for Summer and Academic Year Housing.

If you are interested, the special reduced rates below apply.

  • Shared Double Occupancy Room with Air Conditioning & Kitchen 8 Week Program: $728.00
  • Single Occupancy with Air Conditioning & Kitchen 8 Week Program: $1064.00

Fall 2019 Housing Requirement and Contract
All first year students are required to live on campus during the academic year unless they have an approved exemption from this requirement. Please see the University Housing website for room rates for our various buildings and room styles (uwm.edu/housing).

  • The priority deadline to submit your 2019-2020 Academic Year Contract is May 1st.
  • Should you wish to live off-campus, you must receive a Granted Exemption from the Freshman Residency Requirement. For information on the approved reasons for exemption and to find the request form, please visit  https://uwm.edu/housing/students/residency-requirement/.
