“ I love introducing myself to new people and getting to know them. Who knows if the person sitting next to you will tell you the most interesting story you have ever heard? Who knows if meeting that person will introduce you to networking opportunities in the future? To tell the truth, there is no limit on what you will learn from meeting that person. “ –Tyler Diedrick, Junior.
Introduce yourself to new people in and out of the classroom.
The first few days on campus are awkward for everyone. Remember, everyone is in the same situation and is looking to connect and make new friends.
• In the classroom make a point of meeting at least one new person in every class during the first week. This is a great way to expand your network of friends and help you find a study buddy. You can accomplish this by sitting by someone new or participating in class discussions on D2L.
• If you live in the residence halls be sure to get to know your roommate, suitemates, and housemates. Establishing respectful relationships during the first few weeks will help you throughout the rest of the year.
• You don’t have to become best friends with everyone you meet during your first few weeks. Getting to know lots of new people in all areas of your life with help you establish a network of friends and support across campus. Joining a student organization is a great way to expand your social and professional network. Registering on PantherSync will help you see the various organizations to you at UWM. http://www4.uwm.edu/sao/panthersync/portal/
• Attending Fall Welcome Events during the first few weeks of the semester is a great way to make friends. The Fall Welcome schedule can be found here: fallwelcome.uwm.edu
College is about meeting people to hear new perspectives, learn from others with different backgrounds and philosophies from your own and to make lifelong connections. Saying “Hi” is the first step to meeting some of the best friends you will ever have.
