MKE Scholars



The MKE Scholars program is designed exclusively for students at UW-Milwaukee who are affiliated with a Burke Foundation-sponsored program.  These programs include College Possible, Boys & Girls Club of Milwaukee, Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, PEARLS for Teen Girls, United Community Center, Nativity Jesuit Academy, Carmen High School of Science & Technology, and Cristo Rey Jesuit High School.

Program Benefits:

  • Summer housing and meals stipend
  • A scholarship toward Summer Bridge tuition and fees
  • A renewable scholarship toward tuition for up to four semesters
  • Financial support toward textbooks for up to four semesters
  • A Cultures and Communities Certificate, a distinguishing accomplishment to complement your undergraduate degree
  • Added support from an Academic Adviser, Success Coach, and Peer Mentor
  • Opportunities for advanced leadership development through job opportunities or volunteer roles within the UWM community
  • Social and educational programs to build a strong peer community

Program Requirements:

  • Availability for Summer 2019 semester enrollment in the required summer courses
  • Complete registration for New Student Orientation (NSO) and New Freshman Testing by May 1st
  • Actively participate in and complete the Summer Bridge Program which includes seven (7) credits of English, Math, Electives, and/or non-credit developmental coursework
  • Complete requirements to live on-campus during the 8-week Summer Bridge program
  • Meet as directed with your Academic Adviser, Success Coach, and Peer Mentor
  • Participate in mandated special MKE Scholars events throughout the summer and academic year
  • Complete the Cultures and Communities Learning Community courses throughout your academic career at UWM. The completion of the five (5) courses towards the Cultures and Communities Certificate are to be completed within the first five (5) semesters at UWM
  • Permit UWM to share information about your enrollment and progress with your college readiness program staff and the Burke Foundation
  • Complete & Submit a FERPA form. The form can be accessed here: FERPA Student Consent form
  • Represent the University as a student leader and serve as an ambassador for the MKE Scholars Program
