Performance and Place

This week’s care package is themed Performance and PlaceMilwaukee is host to many renowned performers and we want to introduce you to two of them.

The first artist is UWM’s esteemed film professor Portia Cobb. In 2018, Cobb reimagined Fo Wilson’s sculpture Eliza’s Peculiar Cabinet of Curiosities with her performance Rooted: The Storied Land, Memory, and Belonging.

The connection between placeperformance, and identity is evident in Cobb’s work. Check out her Vimeo here. It is full of great videos from her recent trip to Sierra Leone, many of them featuring performances.

The second artist is Dasha Kelly Hamilton, the current Milwaukee Poet Laureate. Kelly Hamilton continues to work during these troubled times with an ongoing series titled Poemalogues. The show livestreams every Wednesday through the month of April from 4:30 5:15p on Facebook. Here is where you can watch.

“My platform as poet laureate is to present these weekly ‘poemalogues’ and these would be a conversation of body, freedom, power and place,” Kelly Hamilton said. “I’ll invite two folks to chat with me live about their stories and the poems they found.”

In addition to Kelly Hamilton and Cobb, there are countless fantastic performers in Milwaukee, and some are hosting excellent online sessions. A link to their works can be found here. Have a great rest of your day. See you in the UAG soon.
