In Susan Seidelman’s debut feature, a wild runaway teen trades New Jersey for New York City, where she hopes to join what’s left of the punk rock culture. She engages in a number of parasitic relationships amongst members of the waning punk scene. Smithereens, the first American independent film to compete for the Palme d’Or, is an unfaded snapshot of a bygone era.
