Modified: A Food Lover
February 20 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The fourth film being shown as a part of the From Deserts and Desserts mini series is Modified: A Food Lover’s Journey into GMOs. This film, winner of the Best French Canadian Film Award at the 2018 Quebec Cinema Festival, is being shown in conjunction with the 22nd Annual Festival of Films in French (the film is in English and French with English subtitles)
Shot over a span of ten years, the film follows the grassroots struggle to label GMOs, exposing the cozy relationship between the biotech industry and governments. The film is anchored in the moving story of the filmmaker’s relationship to her mom, a prolific gardener, seed saver, and food activist who battled cancer during the film’s production.
Share the Earth, UWM Restaurant Operations and the UWM Office of Sustainability are pleased to partner for the first time on a mini series with the host of the Emmy award-winning show Wisconsin Foodie, Kyle Cherek. From Deserts to Desserts present five films focused on food and the environment. Each monthly film from November through March will start at 6PM and will be followed by a discussion moderated by Kyle Cherek. Kyle will bring one or two guests to each post-film discussion to engage in a lively and informative conversation about the topics of the films, from food waste, to the impact of fair trade on food labor, to growing and producing food as climate changes, to genetically-modified crops, to the need to revolutionize farm labor. We hope you’ll join us for these fascinating films and conversations that will leave you with much food for thought.
