Lyrical Sanctuary Gives Back Featuring Deana Dean

December 7, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Lyrical Sanctuary is UWM’s monthly open mic night, featuring standout spoken word artists, live music and art, and YOU! It is a campus tradition that brings students and community members together to share their passion for poetry and creative self-expression. Prior to each performance, the monthly featured artist leads a creative writing workshop open to anyone willing to put their pen to the page.

Deana Dean has been a powerful voice for many intersections that speak to the Black diasporic experience. Writing and performing poetry for the better part of 2 decades all across the united states, she has solidified her position as a poet, author, community builder and advocate for women and children. Dean’s style is plain spoken and matter of fact. She continues to challenge and provoke thought.  While observing the world around her, she is inspired most by her peers within the Chicago art and poetry community. She has authored three novels “Boy Crazy 1 and 2” as well as “Call me Toni” (all available on Amazon).  Her most recent work, “Merrill Avenue…Poetry, Prose and Magic”, is a return to her roots as a poet and a daughter of the Southside of Chicago, showcasing why she is the powerhouse that she is today.
