Workshops

Each semester the Studio Arts & Craft Centre offers short-term workshops in each of our five areas to teach different skills and techniques. Attendees pay a fee to receive instruction and supplies and end up leaving with a piece(s) of their own, along with new skills to keep making on their own!

Register for Workshops: 

There are three (3) ways to register for workshops: (1) Register online at www.uwm.edu/studentinvolvement/workshop-registration, (2) Call 414-229-5535 or (3) Stop by the Craft Centre to register in person. 

Online registration is a two-step process. Your spot is reserved online, but payment is done over the phone or in person. 

**The Studio Arts & Craft Centre reserves the right to cancel workshops due to low enrollment. In that case, attendees will be notified one day prior to the start date by 10am and will receive a full refund.** 

 

Paint the Milwaukee Flag

Tuesday, September 145:308:30pm

Although it hasn’t been officially adopted by the local government, the People’s Flag of Milwaukee is highly utilized and recognizable around town. This one-day workshop will outline the tracing method and painting of the People’s Flag. Heavy-duty canvas and outdoor house paint will be used to create a durable and weather-resistant handmade flag.

Intro to Photography: Capturing on Black and White Film

Tuesdays, Sep 21 – Oct 5 / 6:00-8:00pm

Participants in this workshop will learn the basics of darkroom photography. Participants will learn how to shoot, develop, and print 35mm film. Using a 35mm film camera, this workshop will give a look at the process of analog photography from start to finish. (Craft Centre will provide a 35mm camera if you do not own one.)

Intro to Metalsmithing

Session 1: Tuesdays, Sep 21 – Oct 12  / 6:00-8:00pm 

This workshop will explore beginning metalsmithing. Participants will learn to saw, file, and solder copper sheets. Finishing techniques will also be covered to get your pieces to a high polished sheen. This workshop will equip participants to begin to utilize our metals area independently in the future and includes Craft Centre torch certification.

Intro to Wheel Throwing

Session 1: Thursdays, Sep 23 – Oct 14  / 6:00-8:00pm 

Take a spin on the potter’s wheel! In this intro wheel throwing class, participants will learn the basics of making pottery with the potter’s wheel. Three main forms will be covered on the wheel: the cup, bowl, and plate. Glazing will also be explored, and participants can expect to walk away with several fully finished pottery pieces. The workshop fee includes one 25 lb. bag of clay with additional clay available for purchase; all glazes are included.

Cyanotype

Thursday, Sep 23  / 5:308:30pm

By using a light-sensitive liquid, coated sheets of paper will be turned into deep blue images called cyanotypes (the same process used to create blueprints). Participants will use photographic transparencies and object stencils to create the imagery. In this one-day class, participants will produce several prints to take home.

Flower Dye Lab

Monday, Sep 27 & Wednesday, Sep 29  / 5:308:30pm & 5:30-6:30pm

In this workshop, participants will learn natural and homemade ways to dye fabric or clothes. Using the technique of flower pounding, we will design a tote bag. With the remainder of the flowers, we will use a technique called ‘Eco Dying,” where we lay flowers out on a silk scarf and wrap it around a stick, then let it steam. Participants will take home two uniquely dyed pieces.

Linoleum Block Printmaking

Mondays, Oct 4 – 25 / 6:00-8:00pm

This workshop is an introduction to the art of making prints from a linoleum block. Beginning with carving a linoleum block and ending with printing the inked block, this is a great process for those wanting to be introduced to printmaking. This process is used in both the fine art and craft worlds.

Enameled Earrings 

Wednesdays, Oct 6 – 20  / 6:00-8:00pm

In this workshop participants will learn how to add enamel (glass glaze) to metal. The processes of using a jeweler saw, preparing the piece for enamel, applying enamel, and adding earring wire will be covered. This is a beginner’s workshop, and no previous enamel or metalworking experience is required.

Intro to Collagraph

Thursdays, Oct 7-21  / Oct 7 6:00-7:00pm, Oct 14 6:00-8:00pm, Oct 21 6:00-8:45pm

We will explore the many possibilities of the collagraph print. Collagraphs are an experimental technique that yields unique prints. They are made from collaging textured items and/or adding textured medium onto a substrate, then sealing it and printing with a printing press. In this workshop, we will be using the intaglio method, as well as using etching on the plate in combination with the collagraph process.

Wheel Throwing: Going Larger

Tuesdays, Oct 19 – Nov 9 / 6:00-8:00pm

In this intermediate workshop, participants will explore various methods of making larger pieces on the potter’s wheel. Throwing in sections, adding coils, and stacking cylinders will be explored. Some previous experience on the potter’s wheel is required for this workshop (Please contact the Craft Centre with questions – craftctr@uwm.edu or 414-229-5535). The workshop fee includes two 25 lb. bags of clay with additional clay available for purchase; all glazes are included.

Screen Printing on Paper: Separations, Exposure, and Production

Wednesdays, Oct 27 – Nov 17 / Oct 27 & Nov 3 6:00-8:00pm, Nov 10 & Nov 17 6:00-8:30pm

In this workshop, you will learn how to translate imagery into a handmade screenprint. Participants will be led through the process of developing their images, producing screens, and the process of printing. The printing process is done color by color. We will touch on some more advanced ink techniques for future use. Printing will be done on paper to create posters or other wall art. The workshop fee includes use of a screen plus paper and ink that you get to keep!

Portrait Drawing

Thursdays, Oct 28 – Nov 8 / 5:30-8:30pm

Participants will go in-depth on a variety of portrait drawing techniques. Charcoal and graphite will be explored. Participants will work from photos as well as live models. No previous drawing experience is necessary.

Film Photo Earrings

Tuesdays, Nov 2-16 / 6:00-8:00pm

A technique for transferring photo film onto a hard backing will be explored. The resulting projects will be custom earrings or pendants with your own photos. This is a beginner workshop no previous photography experience is required. Participants will shoot photos, process the film, and transfer them onto a substrate.

Dry Point Intaglio

Wednesdays, Nov 317 / 6:00-8:00pm

This is an introductory course for intaglio printmaking. Participants will scratch linework into plates with a sharpened tip, ink them up, and use a printmaking press to transfer those drawings from the plate to paper.

Wheel Throwing: Advanced Forms

Tuesdays, Nov 16Dec 7 / 6:00-8:00pm

In this intermediate workshop, participants will explore forms beyond the cup, bowl and plate. Topics covered will include handle techniques, teapots, pitchers, orange juicers, incense holders, pour-over coffee filters, and more. Some previous experience on the potter’s wheel is required for this workshop (Please contact the Craft Centre with questions – craftctr@uwm.edu or 414-229-5535). The workshop fee includes one 25 lb. bag of clay with additional clay available for purchase; all glazes are included.
