Embracing Change: On Trapdoors, Trojan Horses, and Quicksand<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this generative workshop, we will explore how the trajectory of a poem changes\u2014not only in\u00a0subject, but in pressure, direction, temperature, music, and emotional truth. Together, we will look at the concept of the volta, or \u201cturn,\u201d and consider how a poem might pivot suddenly or slowly: like a trapdoor opening beneath the speaker, a Trojan Horse revealing what it has been carrying all along, or quicksand quietly changing the ground beneath us.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Steven Espada Dawson is the author of\u00a0<\/span>Late to the Search Party<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(Scribner, 2025). From East Los Angeles and the son of a Mexican immigrant, he has received fellowships from the Academy of American Poets, the Poetry Foundation, and the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing. His poems appear in many journals and have been anthologized in Sarabande\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Another Last Call<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>Best New Poets<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>Best of the Net<\/span><\/i>, and\u00a0<\/span>Pushcart Prize<\/span><\/i>. He has served as a poetry editor for\u00a0<\/span>Copper Nickel<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Sycamore Review<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and has taught creative writing at universities, libraries, and prisons across the country.
