SUMMARY:Lyrical Sanctuary feat. Steven Espada Dawson
DESCRIPTION:Lyrical Sanctuary Featuring Steven Espada Dawson  \nWednesday\, September 9 | Workshop\, Open Mic & Performance  \n6:00 PM – 6:45 PM | Creative Writing Workshop | Union 119  \nEmbracing Change: On Trapdoors\, Trojan Horses\, and Quicksand  \nIn this generative workshop\, we will explore how the trajectory of a poem changes—not only in subject\, but in pressure\, direction\, temperature\, music\, and emotional truth. Together\, we will look at the concept of the volta\, or “turn\,” and consider how a poem might pivot suddenly or slowly: like a trapdoor opening beneath the speaker\, a Trojan Horse revealing what it has been carrying all along\, or quicksand quietly changing the ground beneath us.  \n7:00 PM – 9:00 PM Open Mic & Feature Performance | Union Fireside Lounge  \nSteven Espada Dawson is the author of Late to the Search Party (Scribner\, 2025). From East Los Angeles and the son of a Mexican immigrant\, he has received fellowships from the Academy of American Poets\, the Poetry Foundation\, and the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing. His poems appear in many journals and have been anthologized in Sarabande’s Another Last Call\, Best New Poets\, Best of the Net\, and Pushcart Prize. He has served as a poetry editor for Copper Nickel and Sycamore Review and has taught creative writing at universities\, libraries\, and prisons across the country. He lives in Madison\, Wisconsin\, where he serves as poet laureate.

SUMMARY:Lyrical Sanctuary feat. Lazarus Halliwell
DESCRIPTION:Lyrical Sanctuary Featuring Lazarus Halliwell  \nWednesday\, November 11 | Workshop\, Open Mic and Performance 6-6:45 p.m. | Creative Writing Workshop | Union 119  \nTransgender Grief\, Living in Exile\, and A Sense of Foreshortened Future    \nIn honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance\, join poet and musician Lazarus Halliwell (they/any) for an intimate writing workshop exploring trans grief\, living in exile\, and the feeling of a foreshortened future. Together\, we’ll reflect on questions of grief\, hiding\, survival\, and the moments we’re still waiting to claim\, transforming those experiences into poetry and song. Whether you’ve packed “seven lifetimes into 29 years” or are just beginning to put words to your story\, this workshop offers space to write\, cry\, laugh\, laugh so we don’t cry\, and maybe cry so we don’t laugh. Sharing is always optional—creativity is guaranteed.  \n  \n7-9 p.m. | Open Mic & Feature Performance | Union Fireside Lounge  \nLazarus Halliwell (they/any) is a 29 year old transmasculine troubadour who was born and raised in sunny Dallas-Fort Worth\, TX. In a chain of events not unlike a queer cripple punk version of Roman Holiday\, they found themselves in Wisconsin in late 2021\, where they have remained ever since. They are married to their beloved husband\, Anthony\, and are pledged in eternal servitude to two spoiled cats. Their most recent releases are a chapbook of poems about mental health and growing up queer called fear not the brave pain (2025)\, a fiery album entitled Hardshell (2023)\, and a poem about their beloved father called “Thirsty Ghost”\, which will be released in the near future in fsm.

SUMMARY:Lyrical Sanctuary feat. Mad Static
DESCRIPTION:Lyrical Sanctuary Featuring Mad Static  \nWednesday\, December 2 | Workshop\, Open Mic and Performance   \n6:00 PM – 6:45 PM | Creative Writing Workshop | Union 119  \nSet Yourself Free  \nWe all have things in our life that tie us emotionally and spiritually\, yet we often don’t know how\, when or where to let loose in our self expression. In this workshop\, we will use poetry and songwriting as a way to free ourselves from the things that hold us back from being our true selves. No matter how raw the subject matter is or how revealing the words are\, this will be a place for conversation and camaraderie.    \n   \nIf there’s anything that you need to have additional details on or anything else you need from me\, notify me as soon as you can.  \n  \n7:00 PM -9:00 PM | Open Mic & Feature Performance | Union Fireside Lounge  \nMad Static is a hip-hop artist\, poet\, and songwriter\, based out of Milwaukee. As a teenager\, he looked to music (specifically hip-hop\, metal\, and alternative rock) as a way of dealing with the pressures of high school and living up to others’ expectations\, that nearly led him to depression. Ever since he first performed poetry for his high school talent show\, Static began going non-stop at writing and doing whatever it took to get his name heard.   \nAs he made music a full-time ambition\, he began cultivating his signature sound through various styles. A sound that intentionally mixes spoken word roots\, with sounds including Boom Bap\, contemporary Trap\, as well as House and Industrial. Static’s songs flow back and forth between themes of sociopolitical anguish to determination and self-discovery\, recited in almost a stream-of-consciousness delivery.  \n  \nFollow Mad Static’s journey on Instagram @madstatic414
