SUMMARY:A Tending - Exhibition Run
DESCRIPTION:Join the Union Art Gallery for A Tending\, featuring UWM alumna Jennifer Bastian. Through fiber\, sculpture\, installation\, and photography\, Jennifer creates environments that invite reflection\, vulnerability\, and care. Drawing from personal experiences\, her work transforms everyday materials into vessels that emphasize the shared human yearning for safety and acceptance. We hope this exhibition encourages a sense of community among visitors while suggesting that healing can emerge through shared stories and acts of care. Jennifer received her BFA in Photography from SAIC and her MA and MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is also the Thurber Park Artist in Residence for the City of Madison for 2024-2026.

SUMMARY:Do the Right Thing
DESCRIPTION:Set on one block of Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy “Do or Die” neighborhood at the height of summer\, this 1989 masterpiece confirmed Spike Lee as a writer and filmmaker of peerless vision and social engagement. Over the course of a single day\, the easygoing interactions of a cast of unforgettable characters give way to heated confrontations as tensions rise along racial fault lines. Punctuated by the anthemic refrain of Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power\,” Do the Right Thing is a landmark in American cinema\, as politically and emotionally charged and as relevant now as when it first hit the big screen. \nSTAFF PICK – Selected by Faraja Mukome

SUMMARY:Take Care of My Cat
DESCRIPTION:4K Restoration!\n\nA sleeper hit at the time of its release\, Jeong Jae-eun’s perceptive debut chronicles the lives of five graduating friends whose bonds begin to fracture as they contend with a postgrad reality of squashed dreams and unequal opportunities. Jeong sets the lives of her protagonists (including Bae Doona in a breakout role) against the industrial backdrop of Incheon\, a port city bearing the brunt of South Korea’s ruthless globalization – in what is now a timeless snapshot of a rapidly evolving society. Alternately bleakly realistic and effortlessly cool\, suffused with the joys of girlhood yet clear-eyed about the uneasy transition to adulthood\, Take Care of My Cat offers a tender\, multi-faceted portrait of young women at the turn of the new millennium.\n\nPreceded by Influenza (dir. Bong Joon-ho\, 2004\, 30 mins)\, a startling short film from the Academy Award-winning director of Parasite.

SUMMARY:The Virgin Suicides
DESCRIPTION:Beautiful\, haunting\, and unforgettable.   \nJoin us at the Union Cinema for a screening of The Virgin Suicides\, Sofia Coppola’s acclaimed debut feature.   \nIn an ordinary suburban house\, on a lovely tree-lined street\, in the middle of 1970s America\, lived the five beautiful\, dreamy Lisbon sisters\, whose doomed fates indelibly marked the neighborhood boys who to this day continue to obsess over them. A story of love and repression\, fantasy and terror\, sex and death\, memory and longing. It is at its core a mystery story: a heart-rending investigation into the impenetrable\, life-altering secrets of American adolescence.  \nDo not miss this dream-like drama at our Union Cinema!   \nThe Union Cinema is on the second floor of the UW-Milwaukee Student Union building.

SUMMARY:Picnic at Hanging Rock
DESCRIPTION:35mm Print! Arthouse Classics \nAt the turn of the twentieth century\, a small group of students from an all-female college vanish during a Valentine’s Day outing to a strange geological formation in the Australian outback in this sensual and striking tale that put director Peter Weir on cinema’s map and helped usher in a new wave of Australian arthouse film. Less a mystery than a journey into the heart of the mystical\, as well as an inquiry into issues of class and sexual repression in Australian society\, Weir’s gorgeous\, disquieting film is a transcendant work of poetic horror with few equals before or since. \nThe Union Cinema is on the second floor of the UW-Milwaukee Student Union building.   \n

SUMMARY:Tampopo
DESCRIPTION:Arthouse Classics \nThe tale of an eccentric band of culinary ronin who guide the widow of a noodle-shop owner on her quest for the perfect recipe\, this rapturous “ramen western” by Japanese director Juzo Itami is an entertaining\, genre-bending adventure underpinned by a deft satire of the social conventions that distort the most natural of human urges—our appetites. Interspersing the efforts of Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto) and friends to make her café a success with the erotic exploits of a gastronome gangster and glimpses of food culture high and low\, the sweet\, sexy\, and surreal Tampopo is a lavishly inclusive paean to the sensual joys of nourishment\, and one of the most mouthwatering examples of food on film ever concocted. \nThe Union Cinema is on the second floor of the UW-Milwaukee Student Union building.

SUMMARY:El Topo
DESCRIPTION:Midnight Classics! 35mm print! \nAlejandro Jodorowsky’s legendary\, notorious cult hit arguably created the genre of the midnight movie — a spectacle so stunning and bizarre that normal hours couldn’t contain it. Melding influences from tarot reading to the Bible to surrealist art into a mind-blowing acid-trip western\, Jodorowsky cast himself as the leather-clad gunman\, El Topo (‘the mole’)\, who wanders through a desert strewn with mystical symbols on an unnamed quest\, leaving blood and carnage in his wake. Declared a masterpiece at its release by John Lennon\, El Topo tops even the most outrageous aesthetic experiments of its era and remains unmatched in its strange beauty and radical provocations. \nThe Union Cinema is on the second floor of the UW-Milwaukee Student Union building.

SUMMARY:Only Angels Have Wings | Pirates vs. Pilots
DESCRIPTION:Choose your crew! This film is part of our Pirates vs. Pilots weekend at the Union Cinema. Celebrate legendary adventures on the sea and in the sky! \nAt night in Barranca\, a South American port jammed up against the Andes\, a close-knit group of American mail pilots navigate the treacherous mountain fog. Cary Grant’s performance as laconic Geoff Carter reveals unexplored dimensions of his screen persona––stoic\, harsh\, emotionally guarded. Master director Howard Hawks distills weeks of narrative into twenty-four hours with remarkable economy\, expressing through composition\, objects\, and gesture what lesser filmmakers would render with obvious sentiment. His technical virtuosity serves profound philosophical concerns: the integration of individuals into the group\, the stoic denial of death\, and the existential affirmation of identity against an indifferent universe—qualities that led Robin Wood to justifiably term the film “a completely achieved masterpiece.” \nThe Union Cinema is on the second floor of the UW-Milwaukee Student Union building.

SUMMARY:River of Grass
DESCRIPTION:Experimental Documentary New Release! \nRiver of Grass is a present-day reimagining of environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s celebrated book\, The Everglades: River of Grass (1947)\, which forever changed the public understanding of the region from a worthless swamp to an essential source of freshwater\, enabling the ecosystem to endure\, however barely\, today. In the wake of a hurricane\, Stoneman Douglas visits filmmaker Sasha Wortzel in a dream\, catalyzing a prismatic journey across the Everglades with Miccosukee educator and activist Betty Osceola. Interweaving Douglas’s writing\, personal narration\, present-day verité\, and archival footage\, River of Grass reveals how this country’s origin story haunts and shapes contemporary American life\, while asking how we might weather coming storms better together. \n  \n
