SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays Presents: Spectres of the Spectrum
DESCRIPTION:Free for everyone!! On 16mm!! Spectres of the Spectrum is a feature-length 16mm film utilizing old ‘kinescopes’ (filmed records of early TV broadcasts before the advent of videotape\, mostly from the late Fifties’ educational show called ‘Science in Action’) to create an eerie\, haunted “media-archaeology” zone for a sci-fi time-travel tale\, wherein live-action actors search for a hidden electromagnetic secret to save the planet from a futuristic war-machine\, inspired by HAARP the High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program.

SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays Presents: New Red Order: Never Settle
DESCRIPTION:Free For Everyone!! This promotional initiation video lures inductees with promises of decolonization and settler remediation. Imagery of settler-led planetary destruction is juxtaposed with sequences of underground group therapy sessions where settlers can lose\, forget\, and explore their identities in order to indigenize. Sharing their labor\, lurking through museums\, and institutions\, future accomplices snap thousands of cellphone pictures of every artifact and artwork on hand. Deploying and containing confrontational representations around the stakes of accomplice-ship\, the video examines the dynamics influencing the conditions in which the concerns of indigenous people are often treated as a topic du jour and then co-opted by non-indigenous people\, alongside the search for ways to make amends.\n\nNew Red Order is a public secret society facilitated by core contributors Adam Khalil\, Zack Khalil\, and Jackson Polys. In our current period of existential and environmental catastrophe\, desires for Indigenous epistemologies increase and enterprising settlers labor to extract this understanding as if it were a natural resource. New Red Order—emerging out of contradistinction from the Improved Order of Red Men\, a secret society that ‘plays Indian’—calls attraction toward indignity into question\, yet promotes this desire\, and enjoins potential non-Indigenous accomplices to participate in the co-examination and expansion of Indigenous agency. Working with an interdisciplinary network of informants the NRO co-produces video\, performance\, and installation works that confront settler colonial tendencies and obstacles to Indigenous growth. They have presented their work at Artists Space\, Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin\, Kunsthal Charlottenborg\, Kunstverein in Hamburg\, Lincoln Center\, Museum of Modern Art\, Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit\, New York Film Festival\, Sundance Film Festival\, Toronto Biennial 2019\, Walker Art Center\, and Whitney Biennial 2019\, among others\, expanding the public secret society network across numerous institutional platforms.

SUMMARY:God's Country
DESCRIPTION:On 16mm!!! Join us at the Union Cinema Thursday\, September 18th at 7pm for a 16mm screening of God’s Country! The Films director\, Louis Malle\, traveled into the heart of Minnesota in 1979 to capture the everyday lives of the men and women in a prosperous farming community. Six years later\, during Ronald Reagan’s second term\, he returned to find drastic economic decline. Free of stereotypes about America’s “heartland\,” God’s Country\, commissioned for American public television\, is a stunning work of emotional and political clarity. Be sure to pick up a Union Cinema calendar to see what other films we’re showing this month!

SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays: From the Archives
DESCRIPTION:Curated by the Department of Film\, Video\, Animation and New Genres\, these programs feature a unique opportunity to see some of the incredible 16mm prints from the UWM Cinema Arts Archive. The Cinema Arts Archive now contains over 400 essential works on 16mm film\, and a handful on 35mm\, from a range of historic and contemporary cinema. This unique and expansive archive continues to preserve\, grow\, and reflect the ever-evolving landscape of avant-garde film—representing a commitment to the past\, present\, and future of the medium. Alongside giants like Hollis Frampton\, Bruce Baillie\, Deborah Stratman\, and Jennifer Reeves lie many lesser-known gems ready to ignite curiosity and expand minds. While the collection aims to capture an array of crucial cinematic history\, modes\, and movements\, the majority of work is artist-made\, short form\, and experimental in nature.
