SUMMARY:Do the Right Thing
DESCRIPTION:35mm Print! \nSet on one block of Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy “Do or Die” neighborhood at the height of summer\, this 1989 masterpiece confirmed Spike Lee as a writer and filmmaker of peerless vision and social engagement. Over the course of a single day\, the easygoing interactions of a cast of unforgettable characters give way to heated confrontations as tensions rise along racial fault lines. Punctuated by the anthemic refrain of Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power\,” Do the Right Thing is a landmark in American cinema\, as politically and emotionally charged and as relevant now as when it first hit the big screen. \nSTAFF PICK – Selected by Faraja Mukome

SUMMARY:Take Care of My Cat
DESCRIPTION:4K Restoration!\n\nA sleeper hit at the time of its release\, Jeong Jae-eun’s perceptive debut chronicles the lives of five graduating friends whose bonds begin to fracture as they contend with a postgrad reality of squashed dreams and unequal opportunities. Jeong sets the lives of her protagonists (including Bae Doona in a breakout role) against the industrial backdrop of Incheon\, a port city bearing the brunt of South Korea’s ruthless globalization – in what is now a timeless snapshot of a rapidly evolving society. Alternately bleakly realistic and effortlessly cool\, suffused with the joys of girlhood yet clear-eyed about the uneasy transition to adulthood\, Take Care of My Cat offers a tender\, multi-faceted portrait of young women at the turn of the new millennium.\n\nPreceded by Influenza (dir. Bong Joon-ho\, 2004\, 30 mins)\, a startling short film from the Academy Award-winning director of Parasite.

SUMMARY:Picnic at Hanging Rock
DESCRIPTION:35mm Print! Arthouse Classics \nAt the turn of the twentieth century\, a small group of students from an all-female college vanish during a Valentine’s Day outing to a strange geological formation in the Australian outback in this sensual and striking tale that put director Peter Weir on cinema’s map and helped usher in a new wave of Australian arthouse film. Less a mystery than a journey into the heart of the mystical\, as well as an inquiry into issues of class and sexual repression in Australian society\, Weir’s gorgeous\, disquieting film is a transcendant work of poetic horror with few equals before or since. \nThe Union Cinema is on the second floor of the UW-Milwaukee Student Union building.   \n

SUMMARY:The Motorcycle Diaries | Latine Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:Free For Everyone! \nIn 1952\, two Argentinean students took off on a sputtering Norton 500 motorcycle to discover their magnificent continent. Traveling northward through Chile\, Bolivia\, Peru\, Colombia\, and finally ending in Venezuela\, the two discover not only the complex cultures and diverse people of South America\, but their own destinies. Before Ernesto became the revolutionary Che Guevara\, his early travels provided the sentimental education that transformed him by showing him the reality of South America. The film unabashedly revives the venerable\, romantic notion that travel can enlarge the soul\, and even change the world. \nThe Union Cinema is on the second floor of the UW-Milwaukee Student Union building.   \nCosponsored by Sociocultural Programming

SUMMARY:Tampopo
DESCRIPTION:Arthouse Classics \nThe tale of an eccentric band of culinary ronin who guide the widow of a noodle-shop owner on her quest for the perfect recipe\, this rapturous “ramen western” by Japanese director Juzo Itami is an entertaining\, genre-bending adventure underpinned by a deft satire of the social conventions that distort the most natural of human urges—our appetites. Interspersing the efforts of Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto) and friends to make her café a success with the erotic exploits of a gastronome gangster and glimpses of food culture high and low\, the sweet\, sexy\, and surreal Tampopo is a lavishly inclusive paean to the sensual joys of nourishment\, and one of the most mouthwatering examples of food on film ever concocted. \nThe Union Cinema is on the second floor of the UW-Milwaukee Student Union building.

SUMMARY:El Topo
DESCRIPTION:Midnight Classics! 35mm print! \nAlejandro Jodorowsky’s legendary\, notorious cult hit arguably created the genre of the midnight movie — a spectacle so stunning and bizarre that normal hours couldn’t contain it. Melding influences from tarot reading to the Bible to surrealist art into a mind-blowing acid-trip western\, Jodorowsky cast himself as the leather-clad gunman\, El Topo (‘the mole’)\, who wanders through a desert strewn with mystical symbols on an unnamed quest\, leaving blood and carnage in his wake. Declared a masterpiece at its release by John Lennon\, El Topo tops even the most outrageous aesthetic experiments of its era and remains unmatched in its strange beauty and radical provocations. \nThe Union Cinema is on the second floor of the UW-Milwaukee Student Union building.

SUMMARY:Macho Dancer
DESCRIPTION:Queer International. 4K Restoration! \nHeavily censored upon release in director Lino Brocka’s native Philippines but hugely successful overseas\, Macho Dancer blends a flair for socially conscious melodrama with niche erotic pulp provocation. Upon losing a reliable American client\, 18-year-old gigolo Pol leaves his native province to try his luck in the soapy gay clubs of Manila\, where he discovers more than his young mind bargains for: an underbelly of protection rackets\, human trafficking\, and teeming political corruption. Beneath the film’s astutely cynical look on systemic\, class exploitation in the Philippines is a neon-lit tale of sexual self-discovery gyrating between queer desire and heteronormative strictures\, sensuality and grit\, tenderness and violence. \nThe Union Cinema is on the second floor of the UW-Milwaukee Student Union building.

SUMMARY:Only Angels Have Wings | Pirates vs. Pilots
DESCRIPTION:Choose your crew! This film is part of our Pirates vs. Pilots weekend at the Union Cinema. Celebrate legendary adventures on the sea and in the sky! \nAt night in Barranca\, a South American port jammed up against the Andes\, a close-knit group of American mail pilots navigate the treacherous mountain fog. Cary Grant’s performance as laconic Geoff Carter reveals unexplored dimensions of his screen persona––stoic\, harsh\, emotionally guarded. Master director Howard Hawks distills weeks of narrative into twenty-four hours with remarkable economy\, expressing through composition\, objects\, and gesture what lesser filmmakers would render with obvious sentiment. His technical virtuosity serves profound philosophical concerns: the integration of individuals into the group\, the stoic denial of death\, and the existential affirmation of identity against an indifferent universe—qualities that led Robin Wood to justifiably term the film “a completely achieved masterpiece.” \nThe Union Cinema is on the second floor of the UW-Milwaukee Student Union building.

SUMMARY:The Day She Returns | Hong Sang-soo Double-Bill
DESCRIPTION:Milwaukee Premiere! \nA famous actress\, having stepped back from her career after marriage and a subsequent divorce\, returns to the profession with a role in an independent film. As the film’s release approaches\, she takes part in a series of press interviews\, only to discover later that she cannot clearly recall what was said. (She is tired and wants to go home; her daughter is waiting.) Infused with quiet observation and subtle humor\, Hong Sang-soo’s 34th feature is a meditation on memory and performance\, continuing the director’s distinctive exploration of the boundaries between lived experience and artistic creation\, marked by intimate conversations\, precise compositions\, and a gently unfolding sense of time. \n

SUMMARY:River of Grass
DESCRIPTION:Experimental Documentary New Release! \nRiver of Grass is a present-day reimagining of environmentalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s celebrated book\, The Everglades: River of Grass (1947)\, which forever changed the public understanding of the region from a worthless swamp to an essential source of freshwater\, enabling the ecosystem to endure\, however barely\, today. In the wake of a hurricane\, Stoneman Douglas visits filmmaker Sasha Wortzel in a dream\, catalyzing a prismatic journey across the Everglades with Miccosukee educator and activist Betty Osceola. Interweaving Douglas’s writing\, personal narration\, present-day verité\, and archival footage\, River of Grass reveals how this country’s origin story haunts and shapes contemporary American life\, while asking how we might weather coming storms better together. \n  \n
