SUMMARY:Two By Black Audio Film Collective: Handsworth Songs
DESCRIPTION:In October 1985 Britain witnessed a spate of civil disturbances in the Birmingham district of Handsworth and in urban centres of London. These were violent\, tragic events\, marked by the death of an elderly black woman\, Joy Gardner and a white policeman\, Keith Blakelock . Handsworth Songs takes as its point of departure these events and the inability of the British media to go beyond its concern with demonising or rationalising the rioters and their motives\, to break the anxiety-driven loop of morbid responses to the presence of black people in Britain.

SUMMARY:Two By Black Audio Film Collective: Who Needs a Heart
DESCRIPTION:Who Needs A Heart is a parable of political becoming and subjective transformation and remains BAFC’s most controversial film. Akin to a sophisticated home-movie history\, a record of life on the fringes in London between 1965 and 1975\, the film explores the forgotten history of British Black Power through the fictional lives of a group of friends caught up in the metamorphoses of the movement’s central figure; the counter-cultural anti-hero\, activist and charismatic social bandit Michael Abdul Malik . Formerly known as Michael X and christened Michael De Freitas \, he left England in 1970 and was tried and executed for his role in an unsolved murder in Trinidad in 1975. The film nevertheless holds him at a distance\, tracing his career through contemporary TV and radio bulletins which counterpoint and parallel the lives of the group.

SUMMARY:Trash or Treasure
DESCRIPTION:Trash or Treasure is a free\, in-person initiative designed to support campus efforts to reduce waste and discourage illegal dumping. Participants can bring items they no longer need to either properly dispose of or leave for others to take. The event even features donated items from University Housing\, giving students a chance to find useful items while also avoiding costly city fines related to improper disposal. \nCoinciding with Trash or Treasure\, the Off-Campus Resource Center\, in partnership with UWM’s Office of Sustainability\, is offering a free large item pick-up on Wednesday\, May 20\, 2026 between 8am and 2pm. This service helps ease the stress of disposing of unwanted items and contributes to a more sustainable campus community. All collected usable items will be made available at our Trash or Treasure event on Thursday\, May 21 from 10am–3pm\, and unusable items will be responsibly discarded. \nPlease click on the button below to learn more and request a large item pick-up! \nRequest Large Item Pick-Up
