SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays Presents: Beyond Resolution: Films By Sabine Gruffat
DESCRIPTION:Free For Everyone!\nThis series of films favors ambiguity and resists resolution. The nearer the gaze\, the more obscure the view. Illegibility here is not an escape from politics\, but a way of inhabiting it differently: as a site of tension\, friction\, and possibility.\n\nThese films draw from a range of genres and layered techniques. Images are processed to draw attention to the hidden logics in software\, hardware\, and materiality. In repurposing media\, the works call attention to the histories from which meaning’s fragile frameworks emerge.\n\nCosponsored by the Dept. of Film/Video/Animation/New Genres

SUMMARY:Radicalize\, Reclaim and Recycle; Junk journaling\, clothing vendors and mending\, conversations
DESCRIPTION:This Earth Day\, join the Women’s Resource Center for Radicalize\, Reclaim\, and Recycle\, an afternoon where activism meets sustainability through creative expression and community connection. Together\, we’ll explore how feminism\, environmental justice\, and sustainability intersect as we transform everyday “waste” into art that reflects resistance\, empowerment\, and care for our planet. \nWhat is in store:  \n\nSustainable Vendor Fair: Come shop at our mini vendor fair highlighting upcycle and sustainable Milwaukee vendors! Fast fashion and excessive packaging create massive amounts of waste! We’re inviting local artists whose products are made from eco-friendly\, recycled and/or up-cycled materials to sell their merchandise to promote responsible consumption and support businesses that have a minimal impact on the environment.\n\n\nClothing mending: If you have clothing items “ruined” by stains or holes\, we want to teach you how to fix them up instead of throwing them out\, don’t toss it lets fix them! The WRC will provide sewing machines\, needles\, thread\, and spare fabric patches to make your clothes as good as new! \n\n\nJunk Journaling: Tap into your creative spirit with junk journaling—an art form that gives new life to discarded materials. We’ll provide the supplies you need to create a personalized journal using recycled paper\, old magazines\, fabric scraps\, and more.  Feel free to bring your own “junk”\, think magazine cutouts\, old receipts\, and even those stray stickers you never knew what to do with—turn them into visual statements of power!\n\n\nA radical future: This event isn’t just about creating art or swapping clothes. Join us in discussions on how feminism\, sustainability\, and environmental justice are interconnected. How can feminism contribute to sustainable futures? How can we use our collective power to shift away from waste and consumption?\n\nThroughout the afternoon\, we’ll also hold space for conversation about how feminist values can help shape more sustainable futures. By reclaiming materials\, sharing resources\, and creating art together\, we can imagine new ways to resist wasteful systems and build communities rooted in care\, creativity\, and collective action. Come craft\, swap\, and connect as we radicalize the future\, reclaim our power\, and recycle with purpose.

SUMMARY:In Excess
DESCRIPTION:Documentary | Free For Everyone! \nIn Excess examines labor\, capital\, and displacement in modern America through the lens of one city’s trash — in sewers and streets\, waterways and workplaces. It’s a gritty dive into the inner workings of a city’s infrastructure that embraces different formats\, weaving newly digitized archival material together with surveillance footage and contemporary vignettes of people at work\, communities in flux\, and waste in motion. Observational and off-beat\, the film finds harmonies and dissonance in patterns of creation\, consumption\, and renewal. \n(Melissa Langer\, USA\, 2025\, English\, 70 min\, DCP)

SUMMARY:James Baldwin Abroad
DESCRIPTION:Special Event | Free For Everyone! \nA Showcase of four short films about American writer James Baldwin\, wherein he muses about race\, sexuality and civil rights\, among other topics\, across Istanbul\, Paris and Great Britain.\n\nJames Baldwin: the brilliant thinker\, writer\, and activist whose prescient essays\, plays\, and novels continue to shine a searing light on American racism 35 years after his death. Born in 1924\, in Harlem\, Baldwin spent much of his life abroad\, and in these three short films — made in Istanbul\, Paris\, and London (with Dick Gregory) — he can be charming\, candid\, churlish\, witty\, and acerbic. Whether ruminating on his own “American-ness\,” his experience as a child-minister\, Black Power\, or the nature of love and sexuality\, creativity\, freedom\, and survival — his unsparing opinions are never less than eye-opening\, and his onscreen presence never less than riveting. All three films included in this program have been recently restored.\n\nCosponsored by ColorLit\nhttps://www.colorlituwm.com/home

SUMMARY:Contours of Becoming Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Countours of Becoming brings together the work of Caroline Calvano and Keelie Murphy-Besaw\, two Milwaukee-based artists whose practices center the body as a site of labor\, adornment\, and self-definition. Working primarily in metal sculpture\, Calvano engages material processes that demand physical strength and endurance. Her work explores adornment and the feminine body not as passive objects of decoration\, but as sites shaped by labor–where effort\, weight\, and time become inseparable from value. Rooted in a commitment to care\, consent\, and accessibility\, Murphy-Besaw’s practice reimagines tattooing as a space of trust and affirmation\, particularly for those who have felt marginalized or unheard in traditional tattoo enviroments. Together these artists consider adornment as an act of agency. Whether forged in metal or inked into skin\, their works insist that decoration is never superficial–it carries out stories of labor\, identity\, and choice. This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on how bodies are shaped\, marked\, and valued\, and how making can become a means of reclaiming space\, power\, and visibility.

DESCRIPTION:Aloof teenage Japanese tourists\, a frazzled Italian widow\, and a disgruntled British immigrant all converge in the city of dreams—which\, in Mystery Train\, from Jim Jarmusch\, is Memphis. Made with its director’s customary precision and wit\, this triptych of stories pays playful tribute to the home of Stax Records\, Sun Studio\, Graceland\, Carl Perkins\, and\, of course\, the King\, who presides over the film like a spirit.
