SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays Presents: Weather\, or Not
DESCRIPTION:The weather moves around as the clouds imagine their own nephology: wondering what these people see when they see what they see. Fluttering by\, attention pulls focus from the movement of the cloud\, to the movement of the wind\, to the movement of the eye\, to the movement of the mind\, without ever moving an inch. All the while\, we’re watching seeing\, or observing looking\, or something like that. A program of short works that explore place\, space and the weather\, in all its sublime\, mundane and chaotic glory. Free for everyone!!

SUMMARY:Jimmy
DESCRIPTION:New Releases! \nIn November 1948\, James Baldwin left New York and\, thanks to a fellowship grant\, relocated to Paris. The 24-year-old writer would spend most of the next decade there\, escaping American racism and his own social alienation\, ensconcing himself in the city’s Algerian quarters and the community of Left Bank artists in Saint-Germain-des-Prés\, and writing his first books. In his first feature\, photographer and filmmaker Yashaddai Owens imagines Baldwin’s first experiences in Paris in impressionistic fashion. Shooting in black-and-white on 16mm film\, Owens conveys a subjective feeling of wonder and freedom as Baldwin observes and absorbs his new environment\, and experiences newfound individuality and erotic liberation. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Experimental Tuesdays Presents: A Brief History of Chasing Storms
DESCRIPTION:A Brief History of Chasing Storms presents a history of the tornado as both a destructive weather event and an American icon. Local monuments to past tornadoes intertwine with mythologies of settlement and displacement. An amateur storm chaser questions his own agency and fate. The CEO of a Wizard of Oz-themed storm shelter company describes a growing market in a world of increasing weather uncertainty. Unfolding episodically\, questions of memory\, inequality\, colonization\, climate change\, and disaster capitalism arise as the film examines legacies of weather within the region colloquially known as “tornado alley.” Filmmaker in Attendance: With artist Curtis Miller in person! Free For Everyone!

SUMMARY:Too Much to Hold Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an artist talk by Brianna Cole\, the featured artist in ‘Too Much to Hold’ at the Union art Gallery! \nToo Much To Hold is an exhibition that features the work of Milwaukee based interdisciplinary artist Brianna Cole. Cole’s work begins as a response to everyday emotional states—nervousness\, decision anxiety\, and the unstoppable passage of time and is rooted in digital processes\, primarily using Procreate and Photoshop alongside 3D modeling software such as Blender. The events and situations that are featured within her work sit heavily in the heart and the mind\, moments that become difficult to hold alone. Rather than attempting to banish discomfort\, Cole creates images that make space for it\, offering these feelings a place to land and settle. In this way\, the drawings and paintings act as acts of care toward the self and toward emotional survival.\nCole received a BFA in Animation from Ball State University and is currently pursuing an MFA in Studio Art at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

SUMMARY:Des “terroristes” à la retraite (“Terrorists” in Retirement)
DESCRIPTION:Too controversial to be shown on French TV when first released\, the film follows seven surviving comrades of the executed members\, found guilty of “terrorism”\, from the immigrant section of the French Resistance during World War II. The documentary provoked unsettling debates about how the group was captured\, and about why the French establishment (and history books) never fully embraced the immigrant and Jewish fighters who were the backbone of armed resistance in Paris. The film provides a powerful corrective to myths concerning the French Resistance. \nPresented as part of the Albertine Cinémathèque program & co-sponsored by the Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies & the Department of History

SUMMARY:Portrait of Jason
DESCRIPTION:Documentary \nOn December 2\, 1966\, director Shirley Clarke and a miniscule film crew gathered in her apartment at the Hotel Chelsea. Bestowed for twelve hours with the one-and-only Jason Holliday\, Clarke confronted the iconic performer about his good times and bad behavior as a gay hustler\, on-and-off houseboy and aspiring cabaret performer. As the cameras rolled and Holliday spun tales\, sang songs and donned costumes through the night\, a mesmerizing portrait formed of a remarkable man. \n

SUMMARY:Drylongso
DESCRIPTION:A lost treasure of 1990s DIY filmmaking\, Cauleen Smith’s Drylongso embeds an incisive look at racial injustice within a lovingly handmade buddy movie/murder mystery/ romance. Alarmed by the rate at which the young Black men around her are dying—indeed\, “becoming extinct\,” as she sees it—brash Oakland art student Pica attempts to preserve their existence in Polaroid snapshots\, along the way forging a friendship with a woman in an abusive relationship\, experiencing love and loss\, and being drawn into the search for a serial killer who is terrorizing the city. Capturing the vibrant community spirit of Oakland in the nineties\, Smith crafts both a rare cinematic celebration of Black female creativity and a moving elegy for a generation of lost African American men.

SUMMARY:Babylon
DESCRIPTION:UK Classics \nFranco Rosso’s incendiary Babylon had its world premiere at Cannes in 1980 but went unreleased in the U.S. for “being too controversial\, and likely to incite racial tension” (Vivien Goldman\, Time Out). Raw and smoldering\, it follows a young dancehall DJ (Brinsley Forde\, frontman of landmark British reggae group Aswad) in South London as he pursues his musical ambitions\, battling fiercely against the racism and xenophobia of employers\, neighbors\, police\, and the National Front.

SUMMARY:Tiger (Tiguere)
DESCRIPTION:Director: José María Cabral \n2024 Dominican Republic | 84 minutes \nPablo is sent to a camp run by his father\, where strength is demanded and fear is treated as failure. Within its rigid rules\, he is taught how to endure\, obey\, and perform a version of masculinity (Dominican tigueraje) that leaves little room for doubt. As Pablo forms fragile connections and questions the lessons imposed on him\, the film drifts between intimacy and fragmentation. Tiger is a tense coming-of-age portrait of control\, inheritance\, and the forces that shape who we become. Best Feature Nominee\, 2025 Guadalajara International Film Festival. \nOther films by José María Cabral: \n\nHotel Coppelia (2021)\nWoodpeckers (2017)\n\nTrailer: https://youtu.be/XTZzPIHt2R0
