SUMMARY:Commuter Study Social
DESCRIPTION:The Commuter Study Social is a bi-monthly event hosted by the Off-Campus Resource Center\, designed specifically for commuter students who want a welcoming place to study and connect. Held in the OCRC\, this event offers a comfortable environment where students can focus on their coursework while enjoying the company of peers who share similar experiences navigating campus life from off campus. \nBeyond providing a productive study space\, the Commuter Study Social fosters a sense of belonging and community among commuter students. It’s an opportunity to meet new people\, form study groups\, and exchange tips and resources for balancing academics with the demands of commuting. By creating this regular gathering\, the OCRC helps ensure commuter students have both academic support and social connections that enhance their overall university experience.

SUMMARY:Jimmy
DESCRIPTION:New Releases! \nIn November 1948\, James Baldwin left New York and\, thanks to a fellowship grant\, relocated to Paris. The 24-year-old writer would spend most of the next decade there\, escaping American racism and his own social alienation\, ensconcing himself in the city’s Algerian quarters and the community of Left Bank artists in Saint-Germain-des-Prés\, and writing his first books. In his first feature\, photographer and filmmaker Yashaddai Owens imagines Baldwin’s first experiences in Paris in impressionistic fashion. Shooting in black-and-white on 16mm film\, Owens conveys a subjective feeling of wonder and freedom as Baldwin observes and absorbs his new environment\, and experiences newfound individuality and erotic liberation. \n  \n

SUMMARY:With Peter Bradley
DESCRIPTION:Documentary \nWhen filmmaker Alex Rappoport met then-79-year-old abstract artist Peter Bradley in early 2020\, Bradley hadn’t sold many paintings or had a major show in over four decades – yet he still painted every day in a shipping-container studio heated by a wood stove\, no matter what the weather. Over time\, Rappoport recorded Bradley’s fascinating life story\, which occupies a unique and seemingly overlooked place in art history.

SUMMARY:Les fantômes (Ghost Trail)
DESCRIPTION:Justice knows no borders for Hamid\, who has taken refuge in France after being detained and tortured by the Assad regime in Syria. Exiled and undercover\, the mild-mannered literature professor now works as part of a secret group pursuing Assad’s enforcers\, who have fled Syria and have assumed new identities in Europe. SUMMARY:Des “terroristes” à la retraite (“Terrorists” in Retirement)
DESCRIPTION:Too controversial to be shown on French TV when first released\, the film follows seven surviving comrades of the executed members\, found guilty of “terrorism”\, from the immigrant section of the French Resistance during World War II. The documentary provoked unsettling debates about how the group was captured\, and about why the French establishment (and history books) never fully embraced the immigrant and Jewish fighters who were the backbone of armed resistance in Paris. The film provides a powerful corrective to myths concerning the French Resistance. \nPresented as part of the Albertine Cinémathèque program & co-sponsored by the Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies & the Department of History

DESCRIPTION:Documentary \nOn December 2\, 1966\, director Shirley Clarke and a miniscule film crew gathered in her apartment at the Hotel Chelsea. SUMMARY:Drylongso
DESCRIPTION:A lost treasure of 1990s DIY filmmaking\, Cauleen Smith’s Drylongso embeds an incisive look at racial injustice within a lovingly handmade buddy movie/murder mystery/ romance. Alarmed by the rate at which the young Black men around her are dying—indeed\, “becoming extinct\,” as she sees it—brash Oakland art student Pica attempts to preserve their existence in Polaroid snapshots\, along the way forging a friendship with a woman in an abusive relationship\, experiencing love and loss\, and being drawn into the search for a serial killer who is terrorizing the city. Capturing the vibrant community spirit of Oakland in the nineties\, Smith crafts both a rare cinematic celebration of Black female creativity and a moving elegy for a generation of lost African American men.

SUMMARY:Le sang et la boue (Of Mud and Blood)
DESCRIPTION:Numbi\, a village in the Democratic Republic of Congo mountains\, lies at the heart of our modern world. Here\, workers mine the coltan that will find its way\, legally or not\, into much of our technology. For decades this grey gold has been the cause of bitter conflicts and exploitation. SUMMARY:Dounia\, le grand pays blanc (Dounia\, the Great White North)
DESCRIPTION:Now settled in Canada after fleeing Syria in Dounia and the Princess of Aleppo (FFF2024)\, Dounia and her grandparents slowly get to know the new home that has welcomed them: its intense seasons\, its special foods\, its languages. Dounia’s grandparents keep their Syrian traditions alive at home\, while her new friends share traditions of their own\, like Rosalie’s French-Canadian lifestyle or Miguizou’s vast indigenous folklore\, which help her connect in unique ways with her father who remained in Aleppo. \nCo-sponsored by the Lynden Sculpture Garden\, the Alliance française de Milwaukee & the Québec Government Office in Chicago

SUMMARY:Godard\, seul le cinéma (Godard Cinema)
DESCRIPTION:Jean-Luc Godard is synonymous with cinema. With the release of Breathless in 1960\, he established himself overnight as a cinematic rebel and a symbol for the era’s progressive and anti-war youth. One of the founders of the French New Wave\, a political agitator\, revolutionary misanthrope\, and film theorist and critic with a career spanning 62 years and 140 films\, Godard is among the most renowned artists of all time. This documentary offers an opportunity for film lovers to look back at his career and the themes that obsessed him. \nPresented as part of the Albertine Cinémathèque program & co-sponsored by the Alliance française de Milwaukee

SUMMARY:Tiger (Tiguere)
DESCRIPTION:Director: José María Cabral \n2024 Dominican Republic | 84 minutes \nPablo is sent to a camp run by his father\, where strength is demanded and fear is treated as failure. Within its rigid rules\, he is taught how to endure\, obey\, and perform a version of masculinity (Dominican tigueraje) that leaves little room for doubt. As Pablo forms fragile connections and questions the lessons imposed on him\, the film drifts between intimacy and fragmentation. Tiger is a tense coming-of-age portrait of control\, inheritance\, and the forces that shape who we become. Best Feature Nominee\, 2025 Guadalajara International Film Festival. \nOther films by José María Cabral: \n\nHotel Coppelia (2021)\nWoodpeckers (2017)\n\nTrailer: https://youtu.be/XTZzPIHt2R0

SUMMARY:Compensation
DESCRIPTION:New Restoration \nA landmark of independent cinema\, Compensation is Zeinabu irene Davis’s moving\, ambitious portrait of the struggles of Deaf African Americans and the complexities of loving relationships at the bookends of the twentieth century. In extraordinary dual performances\, Michelle A. Banks and John Earl Jelks play Malindy and Arthur\, a couple in 1910 Chicago\, as well as Malaika and Nico\, a couple living in the same city almost eighty years later. Their stories are deftly interwoven through the creative use of archival photography\, an original score featuring ragtime and African percussion\, and an editing style both lyrical and tender. Malindy\, an industrious\, intelligent dressmaker\, falls for Arthur\, an illiterate migrant from Mississippi\, along the shore of Lake Michigan. On the same beach in the present\, Malaika\, an inspired and resilient graphic artist\, softens before a brash yet endearing children’s librarian\, Nico. Each pair faces the obstacles of their time as Black Americans\, including structural racism and emerging pandemics.
