John Berges earned his PhD in Biological Oceanography from University of British Columbia working with algal nutrient uptake and metabolism and did postdoctoral work on phytoplankton photosynthesis and protein degradation at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He was a lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast before accepting a faculty position at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he is currently Professor in both the Department of Biological Sciences and the School of Freshwater Sciences. His current research focuses in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and biochemistry and ecophysiology of both freshwater and marine phytoplankton and zooplankton.
