B.A. in Romance Philology (1974) and Ph.D. (1980)\, Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. \nRosario Alvarez’s research focuses on language variation (primarily geographical) and change in Galician. It aims to achieve the best possible description of modern Galician and Portuguese-Galician contrastive grammar (through comparison with both European and Brazilian Portuguese). She is active in the study and editing of Medieval Galician texts\, with a view to gaining greater insight into diachronic and geographical development on the road towards contemporary Galician. \nShe has been an ab initio member of the team developing the Atlas Lingüístico Galego. She is a co-author of two Galician grammars\, with Monteagudo / Regueira (1986) and Xove (2002)\, and the chief researcher of the team writing the grammar of the Real Academia Galega. She leads the Tesouro do léxico patrimonial galego e portugués project\, which involves teams in Galicia\, Portugal and Brazil. This talk will focus on the establishment and growth of the Jewish community within Argentina and the challenges that this community continues to face. \nDr. Victor Mirelman is a native of Argentina\, a leading expert on the history of Jews in Latin America\, and author of a definitive history of the Jews of Argentina. He is a Rabbi and scholar who has taught at The Hebrew University\, Columbia University\, and The Jewish Theological Seminary. She published her first novel\, Soy paciente\, on her return to Argentina in 1980. She has since received numerous national and international awards\, including a Guggenheim Fellowship\, and is one of Argentina’s premier living writers\, with her stories appearing in anthologies worldwide\, and her works translated into many languages\, including English\, French\, German\, Italian\, Portuguese\, Dutch\, Swedish\, Korean\, Japanese\, Bulgarian\, and Serbian. \nHer presentation in Milwaukee forms part of a series on Jewish Latin America associated with the Jewish Latin America Collection in Special Collections at the UWM Libraries. Language contact issues will be highlighted in this event. \n20-minute papers may be delivered in either Portuguese\, Spanish or English in this one-day event. \n\n  Luso-Hispanic Linguistics Symposium\n\nKeynote Speaker\nAndrés Enrique-Arias\, University of the Balearic Islands in Mallorca\, Spain \nPlenary Lecture\, Contact induced change in the Spanish of Mallorca: insights from a historical perspective. \nAndrés Enrique-Arias holds a Ph.D. in Spanish Linguistics from the University of Southern California (Los Angeles\, USA). Currently he is an Associate Professor of Spanish historical linguistics at the University of the Balearic Islands in Mallorca\, Spain. \nHis research focuses on Spanish historical morphosyntax\, particularly phenomena related to clitics and the expression of possession\, from a variety of viewpoints and methodologies such as the functional-typological framework\, comparative pan-Romance analyses\, or quantitative studies from variationist sociolinguistics. He has also published several articles on methodological issues related to the study of linguistic variation through historical texts. \nHe is the Principal Investigator and Director of the web-based Biblia Medieval project. Connected to this project\, he has devoted considerable attention to philological aspects of the medieval translations of the Bible into Spanish and has edited important biblical manuscripts such as Escorial I.i.6 and Real Academia de la Historia ms. 87. She is also an award-winning Chilean-American poet\, essayist\, fiction writer\, and activist with deep interests in Jewish literature\, the literature of human rights in the Americas\, women writers of Latin America\, and migration\, identity\, and ethnicity. Born in the United States\, Agosín was raised in Chile by her Jewish parents\, but was forced to return the U.S. after the military coup of General Pinochet. Aside from her extensive written work\, for which she has won numerous literary awards\, she is also well-known for her outspokenness on issues of women’s rights in Chile. The United Nations has honored her for her work on human rights. The Chilean government awarded her with the Gabriela Mistral Medal of Honor for Life Achievement in 2002. \n \nInterview with José Kozer\nBorn in Havana\, Cuba of Jewish parents who emigrated from Poland (father) and Czechoslovakia (mother)\, José Kozer left his native land in 1960 and lived in New York until 1997\, the year he retired from Queens College as Full Professor and where he taught Spanish and Latin American literatures for thirty-two years. An internationally-recognized poet\, his poetry has been translated into English\, Portuguese\, German\, French\, Italian\, Hebrew\, and Greek\, has been widely anthologized\, and has appeared in numerous literary journals from all over the world. He is the 2013 winner of the highly-prestigious Pablo Neruda Ibero-American Poetry Prize. Established in 2004 for Neruda’s centennial\, the award\, presented by the Chilean government\, honors a lifetime contribution to poetry. In retirement he is actively writing and living in Florida. \n \nInterview with Steve Sadow\nSteve Sadow is Professor of Jewish Studies and Spanish and Latin American Literature at Northeastern University. Sadow specializes in Jewish Latin American literature. He has authored\, edited\, or translated fifteen books and more than seventy book chapters\, articles\, and literary translations. He received the 1999 National Jewish Book Award for his translation work.
