Dr. Pharies is Professor of Hispanic Linguistics and Associate Dean of the Humanities of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Florida. Among his most important publications are Diccionario etimológico de los sufijos españoles [Etymological Dictionary of Spanish Suffixes] (Madrid: Gredos, 2002), University of Chicago Spanish-English Dictionary (University of Chicago Press, 2002, 2012), and Breve historia de la lengua española / A Brief History of the Spanish Language (published simultaneously in Spanish and English by the University of Chicago Press, 2007). His current research project is tentatively entitled Introducción a la historia del léxico del español [Introduction to the History of the Spanish Vocabulary].
