According to the Wisconsin DPI: \u201cEach educator profession, including school social work, has established program licensure guidelines that further delineate knowledge, skills, and dispositions that must be demonstrated in order to be certified to work in Wisconsin public schools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The School Social Work Program at the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare is an approved Wisconsin program that provides the state required institutional endorsement for obtaining a Wisconsin school social work license. Those who complete this program will meet all of the requirements for DPI licensure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main requirements for obtaining a school social work license include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A master\u2019s degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completion of specific course requirements for the school social work license<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completion of a required field practicum in a school setting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"content_block\" id=\"custom_post_widget-12152\"><div class=\"uwm-p-notice uwm-p-notice--slim\">\n    <i class=\"fa-solid fa-info-circle fa-fw\"><\/i>\n    <div class=\"uwm-p-notice--content\">\n        <div class=\"uwm-p-notice--message\">For programs regulated by the Department of Public Instruction, a baccalaureate degree, from an accredited college or university is required.<\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-card uwm-p-card--testimonial uwm-p-card--testimonial-compact uwm-u-mb-40\"><figure class=\"uwm-p-card--body\"><blockquote><p>UWM prepared me by pushing me to\u00a0take a leap with the clinical pathway. School social workers work with all students, including special education. Their practice includes assessment, crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, home visits, consultation, program development, and coordination of school and community services. School social workers provide a vital link between home, school and community, strengthening partnerships to address barriers within the child and their environment that interfere with achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) provides helpful resources for social work program students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"block-2c843d3a-4eaf-4fd6-aa48-c35b38e0a05f\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dpi.wi.gov\/sspw\/pupil-services\/school-social-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction School Social Work Webpage<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dpi.wi.gov\/sspw\/pupil-services\/school-social-work\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School Social Work Practice Guide<\/a> (further delineates the roles and responsibilities of school social workers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dpi.wi.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/imce\/tepdl\/pdf\/lpg_ps_50.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School Social Work Standard Guidelines (PDF)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\"><a href=\"http:\/\/wsswa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Wisconsin School Social Workers Association (WSSWA) website<\/a> also provides helpful information. Students who are enrolled in a university program to obtain a school social work license in Wisconsin may obtain a one-year membership in WSSWA at no charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-notice uwm-p-notice--info uwm-c-link--external\"><i class=\"fa-solid fa-circle-info fa-fw\"><\/i><div class=\"uwm-p-notice--content\"><div class=\"uwm-p-notice--title\">Note<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-notice--message\">UWM\u2019s program meets the state licensing requirements, as delineated in PI 34. For additional information about the licensing requirements for Wisconsin school social workers, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/dpi.wi.gov\/licensing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction website<\/a>.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"tab-7srj-pathways\" class=\"uwm-p-tabcontent--pane\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tier-1-license\">Tier 1 License<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> A one-year renewable license with stipulations and three pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Approved program:<\/strong> The applicant has completed all the coursework at an approved prep program, however still needs to complete something (ex. a portfolio or exam).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>School district need:<\/strong> The applicant is hired by a school district, has at least a bachelor\u2019s degree and is enrolled in a prep program.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clinically trained social worker:<\/strong> The applicant holds an MSW and a valid certificate or license in social work from the Marriage and Family Therapy, Professional Counseling, and Social Work Examining Board.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tier-2-license\">Tier 2 License<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p> A three-year provisional educator license with three pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Approved program:<\/strong> The applicant completed an approved prep program and received institutional endorsement for licensure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Out-of-state:<\/strong> Applicant completed a comparable out-of-state prep program and had instruction in Wisconsin tribes and bands.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Clinically trained social worker:<\/strong> The applicant holds an MSW, has worked in a school as a school social worker for at least one year with a Tier 1 DPI school social work license and has completed training in the following areas:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Developmental psychopathology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assessment of children<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Child abuse and neglect<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working with children and families<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>School social work practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children with disabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The study of minority group relations, including instruction in the history, culture and tribal sovereignty of the federally recognized American Indian tribes and bands located in Wisconsin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instruction in:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1. Resolving conflicts between pupils and between pupils and school staff<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2. Assisting pupils in learning methods of resolving conflicts between pupils and between pupils and school staff, including training in the use of peer mediation to resolve conflicts between pupils<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3. Confirmation of field requirements will be determined during the meeting with the School Social Work Program Coordinator.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"tab-7srj-license-requirements\" class=\"uwm-p-tabcontent--pane\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-individuals-with-an-msw-degree\">Individuals With an MSW Degree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you currently have an MSW from an accredited university but did not complete the school social work requirements, we will need a copy of your transcripts and a recent resume. Email these documents to Ke\u2019Andra Hagans at <a href=\"mailto:klhagans@uwm.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">klhagans@uwm.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-completion-of-field-education-requirements\">Completion of Field Education Requirements<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A two-semester field placement in a public school, under the supervision of a licensed school social worker in Wisconsin, will be required for obtaining a school social work license. An exception of one of these two semesters may be granted to individuals with an MSW degree provided they have at least three years of post-MSW social work experience in an agency setting whose primary mission is to serve children and youth. In addition, the student must be able to provide evidence of the knowledge and skills required of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (PI) subchapters 34.02, 34.04, 34.15, and the Content Guidelines for School Social Workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals without significant experience with children and youth will be required to take an additional field placement in an agency whose primary mission is to serve children and youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-notice uwm-p-notice--info\"><i class=\"fa-solid fa-circle-info fa-fw\"><\/i><div class=\"uwm-p-notice--content\"><div class=\"uwm-p-notice--title\">Note<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-notice--message\">Instructions for submitting applications for a school social work field placement can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/socialwelfare\/social-work-field-program\/\">here<\/a>. <strong>The deadline is February 15 for a Fall semester school practicum, and September 15 for a Spring semester school practicum. We cannot guarantee a field placement for late applications.<\/strong><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-out-of-state-licensed-school-social-workers\">Out-of-state Licensed School Social Workers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction requires that individuals who have been practicing as a school social worker in another state must obtain a school social work license in Wisconsin to meet the state requirements for this position. Wisconsin offers reciprocity for licenses from another state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Individuals who hold a school social work license or a school social work certification in another state may apply directly to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to obtain a school social work license in Wisconsin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Department of Public Instruction will inform you of any additional requirements. If they direct you to first go through the university for \u201cinstitutional endorsement,\u201d then contact <a href=\"mailto:klhagans@uwm.edu\">Ke\u2019Andra Hagans<\/a> to discuss the specific requirements that you will need to complete.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"tab-7srj-competency-exam\" class=\"uwm-p-tabcontent--pane\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-competency-exam\">Competency Exam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">The school social work competency exam has replaced the portfolio and serves as UWM&#8217;s assessment tool. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qn34lfaloIU\">Learn more<\/a> (video).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The competency exam is a requirement for institutional endorsement related to school social work licensure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clinical pathway applicants \u2013 those with an APSW or LCSW \u2013 may be exempt from taking the school social work competency exam. Consult with the school social work program coordinator to determine if you are exempt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The school social work competency exam is solely offered by UWM four times a year and requires an 80% pass rate as part of the school social work licensing program requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-l-col uwm-l-col--4 uwm-l-offset--1\">\n<div
