Winona LaDuke (Anishinaabe), an internationally acclaimed author, orator and activist will speak on the UWM campus on Thursday, Oct. 20, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts, 2419 E. Kenwood Ave.
LaDuke will talk on “Indigenous Strategies for Environmental Justice: Working Together for a Sustainable Future.” Doors open at 5 p.m. and seating is on a first come, first-served basis.
A graduate of Harvard and Antioch universities with advanced degrees in rural economic development, LaDuke has devoted her life to protecting the lands and life ways of Native communities.
LaDuke is founder and co-director of Honor the Earth, a national advocacy group encouraging public support and funding for native environmental groups. With Honor the Earth, she works nationally and internationally on issues of climate change, renewable energy, sustainable development, food systems and environmental justice.
The event is presented by the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare and the Electa Quinney Institute.
