Summer 2016 @ #UWMSocial

This summer, #UWMSocial provided an array of content across all of the UWM accounts. Regular classes may have not been in session, but the team tapped into other resources to continue developing great content for our followers over the summer months.


At the beginning of the summer, we shared a listicle titled “40 Things to Do During the Summer in Milwaukee.” We know that listicles always perform well on our social media accounts, so #UWMSocial compiled a list of different things people could do in Milwaukee during the summer. The listicle reached 53,905 people. It also had 326 shares, 429 reactions and 37 comments. On Medium, the listicle had 7,300 views and 2,800 reads. This bucket list sparked the beginning of the #MKESummer Instagram campaign, which will be featured later on in this post.

Now that final exams are over and grades are in, let the warm weather and fun begin! Looking to explore Milwaukee? Look no further.

To provide more content during the summer, we shared another listicle titled “17 Picture Perfect Places Near UWM.” We highlighted different locations around and near campus to take photos. This listicle reached 32,222 people. It also had 86 shares, 358 reactions and 16 comments. On Medium, the listicle had 5,200 views and 2,300 reads.

We are loving this summer weather! You may not be enrolled in summer credits, but you can still show your Panther Pride at these photo hot-spots around Milwaukee!

The Pokémon GO phenomenon took off this summer. Since our audience was playing the app, we decided to have some fun with it. We worked with the University Relations Video Services to create a video of Chancellor Mark Mone playing Pokémon GO. We are grateful our chancellor isn’t afraid to put himself out there and relate to students. Our analytics show how people loved the video! The video reached 234,133 people with 77,000 views. It received 1,100 reactions, 625 shares and 143 comments. This is our largest organic reached post to date.

Summertime on campus means New Student Orientation! We celebrated the first day of #UWMNSO by posting a picture of our awesome orientation leaders. The tweet had 9,212 impressions, 18 retweets and 47 likes.


Summertime also means beach time! Not far from campus is Bradford Beach, a Milwaukee favorite in the summer. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, we captured the fun at Bradford. The tweet had 15,711 impressions, 33 retweets and 89 likes.


The 4th of July is fun holiday on social media. #UWMSocial organized a photo shoot near Bradford Beach at sunset with red, white and blue sparklers to make U-W-M. The GIF had 9,560 impressions, 20 retweets and 63 likes.



To fill a content void during the summer, we launched a summer campaign called #MKESummer on our Instagram account. We noticed a lot of engagement with the hashtag, so we decided to begin using it. The campaign highlighted things to do and places to go in Milwaukee during summer. Each highlighted item came from the #MKESummer bucket list. The top 3 highest performing photos are below. All photos had more than 500 likes.

We tried something new this summer on Snapchat. Since there is not much activity on campus during the summer months, we partnered with the Student Success Center to bring our Snapchat followers a look at New Student Orientation. #UWMSocial created a content plan and schedule that spanned the multiple sessions of NSO. Many of the orientation leaders signed up to take over the account for an assigned day. With themed days like Meet Us Monday, Tour Tuesday, Ask UWM Wednesday and more, orientation leaders had fun capturing the fun of NSO throughout the summer. All takeovers averaged 1,500 views. Below are some of our favorites.
