UWM kicked off the 2016-17 school year with a jam-packed September.
In early September, we welcomed thousands of students back to campus and introduced our newest Panthers, the Class of 2020, during our University Welcome event. Along with taking the annual class photo, students tossed their 2020 class coin into the beloved fountain for a little good luck. #UWMSocial made its very first attempt with Facebook Live during the event – hoping to capture the excitement in real-time. About thirty seconds into the Facebook Live, it crashed because of the high number of cell phones in close-proximity. This was disappointing but also a great learning experience for our social team. The good news is our post welcoming the Class of 2020 performed very well – reaching a whopping 190,967 people along with 2,410 reactions and 666 shares.
It's official! Welcome Class of 2020 to UWM!
Fall Welcome wasn’t lacking in the fun category. UWM welcomed back students with more than 100 events, including Pantherfest headlined by Jason Derulo and Bishop Briggs. Our video team captured the fun from a ton of different events and into a recap video for #UWMSocial to share. All in all, the video reached 211,184 people with 1,720 reactions. The video also had 83,389 views on Facebook and 806 views on YouTube. If you haven’t seen it, you should:

“Hey UWM, you’re getting old.” UWM turned 60 years this September, so we celebrated with cake in Spaights Plaza. Our video team put together an awesome video to commemorate the milestone. This post reached 111,020 people with 927 reactions and 446 shares. The video performed well on Facebook with 33,012 views and 1,297 views on YouTube.
Sixty years. 180,000 graduates. Countless lives changed. Today we celebrate our Founder's Day, marking the 60th anniversary of UWM. We've done a lot in the past 60 years. We are the state’s top educator of veterans, librarians, Wisconsin police chiefs and educators. We boast top-ranked programs in nursing, film and accounting. We are home to Wisconsin’s only School of Public Health, the state’s sole School of Architecture and Urban Planning, and the only School of Freshwater Sciences in the country. We're a top green school & a premier research university. Our graduates are a global force. We're looking forward to the next 60 years!

We think fall is a pretty good time to take photos around UWM. We captured quite a few around campus including a beautiful drone shot for the #FirstDayofFall. This photo collected 784 likes – making it one of our most liked photos of the month.
Did I mention UWM had a birthday? On Founders Day, #UWMSocial dug deep in the archives for this throwback photo of a student biking through Spaights Plaza on a gloomy day. You guys seemed to like it too, as it earned 781 likes.
We think you take awesome photos, too. Be sure to use #UWM when your posting that next photo of our beautiful campus.
This month, UWM theater professor Anne Basting earned the MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant – making her the first UWM faculty member to earn the prestigious award. Our post congratulating her earned 32 likes and 60 retweets. Our video team created an awesome video to commemorate her, check it out:
Congrats to theater professor Anne Basting, named a 2016 MacArthur Fellow. She is one of 23 people who earned the MacArthur Foundation's prestigious honor, commonly known as the "genius" grant, which is awarded to extraordinary individuals who are breaking new ground and inspiring us all with their creativity.
