March 2016 @ #UWMSocial

By Bo Bayerl, Lead Digital Communications Intern

Now with a month of the semester under our belts, March has arrived. Highlights include University Relations and Communications release of the annual Research Report, showcasing our best research at UWM, and capturing the Horizon League tournament in Detroit, Michigan.

University Relations Video team produced videos showing UWM research and #UWMSocial chose one to feature on Facebook. A College of Health Sciences professor helped to develop an exercise program that reduces firefighter injuries while on the job. The video saw great success with a total reach of 44,870 and 15,000 views. It was also shared 119 times and had 192 reactions. If you haven’t already watched the video, you should:

UWM-based exercise program protects firefighters from injury

Firefighters put themselves in harm’s way on a daily basis. Muscle strains and sprains are part of the job, but UWM professor has been rewriting the rules of firefighter fitness training and recovery with the Milwaukee Fire Department:

This month, we changed our cover photo to another collage of crowdsourced photos showcasing our beautiful campus buildings, the fountain and our students in the springtime. #UWMSocial compiled the photos and created the collage using Adobe Lightroom. It’s always nice to freshen up the profile page and give it a new look every so often.

On March 21, we celebrated Twitter’s 10th birthday by tweeting our first tweet ever, which was underwhelming. Although it only had had 8 likes, there were 4,446 impressions and 94 engagements.

March was also a month where Mother Nature couldn’t make up her mind. #UWMSocial took advantage of the late snowfall. It saw a total of 34 likes, 12 retweets, 7,060 impressions and 582 engagements.

We featured a lot on Snapchat in March. We partnered with entities on campus to show student events and Spring Break.

During Spring Break, UWM’s Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership & Research went on their annual Alternative Spring Break trip to Asheville, North Carolina. We partnered with the center and captured the service of our students. UWM’s Habitat for Humanity group also took over the account and showed how they were making a difference on Spring Break. Each story saw about 1,300 views.

We also partnered with Sociocultural Programming as they went on a Field, Food, and Justice Tour on Caesar Chavez Day. The bus stopped at several places around Milwaukee with Snapchat. The story saw an average of 1,400 views.

March has come and gone, and just like that, half of the spring semester passed! #StaySocial, Panthers.
