Participants volunteer at various non-profit agencies while enhancing their leadership skills. In addition to service, participants have opportunities to explore Asheville and learn about the unique culture of the region while doing fun team building activities. First, a written application through the website stating their interest in the alternative break. After submitting a complete application, students will receive a confirmation email. Second, students will need to complete a group interview to demonstrate their teamwork skills.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">What is a typical day like?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>The trip begins and ends with a travel day to North Carolina. Days within the trip typically last from 9 am until 5 pm. Alternative Spring Break Trip Leaders work to coordinate unique service opportunities that meet the need of the community and are meaningful for student participants. After the day&#8217;s service is complete, the entire group will return to enjoy lunch as a group and will have a planned afternoon activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.125rem;color: initial\">Students will then participate in reflection to help process the day before eating dinner together. The evening consists of free time and time to form connections with other students on the trip.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With primary focus on service, some time on the trip may be spent exploring cultural and sightseeing options.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">How much does the trip cost and what does it cover?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>The cost of Alternative Spring Break is $225 which covers transportation, lodging, most meals, activities and more. We strive to keep the cost of our trips affordable for all participants.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">I have dietary restrictions. What should I do?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Please note any dietary restrictions on your application so Trip Leaders can plan accordingly when shopping for food and planning meals.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">I\u2019m 21. Can I buy alcoholic beverages during the trip?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>No. Alternative Spring Break is alcohol- and drug-free. During immersion experiences such as this, UWM seeks to create an inclusive environment that all can participate in and enjoy. All participants must follow the alcohol- and drug-free nature of our trips.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">How do we get to Asheville and our service sites?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>All transportation will be provided by a SET staff member or student leader who has been cleared through the university. Your transportation will be a minivan.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Where do we stay?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, NC.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--header\">Should I bring money on the trip?<\/div><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel\"><div class=\"uwm-p-accordion--panel-inner uwm-u-clear\">\n<p>Yes. The cost of the trip will not cover meals and snacks on the travel days to and from North Carolina and free time in downtown Asheville.
