Charter:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A3.0\u00a0 Graduate Student Fellowships Committee<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Graduate Student Fellowships Committee determines and manages the application and selection process for graduate students applying for internal fellowships such as the Distinguished Dissertation Fellowship and the Distinguished Graduate Student Fellowship. The committee also recommends general policy changes related to fellowships to the Graduate Faculty Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Membership.<\/strong>\u00a0The committee is composed of the following members:\n
      \n
    1. Twelve Faculty elected from among the Graduate Faculty from the Divisions of Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences, Professions, and Social Sciences. Three faculty members shall be elected from each of these four Divisions, and no more than one shall serve from any one department or non-departmentalized school or college. No member may serve more than two consecutive terms or portions thereof. Elected members of the committee should reflect the range of disciplinary competencies in the University and represent the colleges insofar as the size of the committee allows.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. One graduate student appointed annually by the Student Association. Student members must be currently enrolled graduate students. Student members will not review fellowship applications or participate in closed meetings where applications are discussed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Two ex-officio and non-voting members, as follows:\n
        \n
      1. The Dean of the Graduate School or designee;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. the fellowships coordinator of the Graduate School.

        The Graduate Student Fellowships Committee has the authority to declare vacant the seat of those committee members who fail to attend three regular meetings in an academic year.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Chair.<\/strong>\u00a0The Chair of the Graduate Student Fellowships Committee also serves on the Graduate Faculty Committee.

        The Graduate Student Fellowships Committee will elect a Chair from among its membership at its first meeting of each academic year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      4. Functions.<\/strong>\n
          \n
        1. Within the provisions of UWM regulations and practices, the committee formulates and implements procedures for allocation of available fellowship funds administered by the Graduate School. To this end, the committee annually establishes regular procedures that include but are not limited to application deadlines, nomination forms, review and selection procedures, and award announcements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        2. Following its designated application and selection procedures, the committee annually reviews applications and recommends fellowship awards for meritorious graduate students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        3. The committee makes recommendations to the Graduate Faculty Committee for general policy changes that relate to graduate fellowships across all programs. The committee may make such recommendations on its own initiative, at the request of the Graduate Faculty Committee, or at the request of UWM Administration of the Graduate School.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        4. On request of UWM Administration of the Graduate School, the committee may assist in the assignment of other graduate student financial support awards.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Meetings:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

          The committee met two times during the year, October 8, for the \u201ccheck-in\u201d meeting, in which members are instructed on the year\u2019s work for the committee, and on March 20, the \u201cdecision meeting\u201d, in which the committee decided on the list of applicants for the DGSF and the DDF that we recommended as awardees and alternates.  (We recommended 16 students for the DDS, with 3 alternates, and 16 for the DGSF, with 4 alternates).  As usual, the members of the committee prepared for that second meeting by reviewing and scoring the applications assigned and made available to them in advance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Normally the committee would meet four times in a year.  There is usually a meeting in advance of reviewing that year\u2019s set of applications to instruct new members and remind continuing members of the procedure for scoring applications for the DDF and the DGSF.  Scheduling issues prohibited this meeting this year, and instead Dana Baldwin, the Graduate School Fellowship Coordinator, reached out to members as needed to provide instruction in the procedure.  There is also usually a meeting later in the spring semester in which the committee reviews its procedures and considers possible modifications to them.  This meeting also didn\u2019t take place this year, largely because the Graduate School Fellowship Coordinator was on leave and the Chair of the committee did not see a need for it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The committee, with the great help of Dana Baldwin and the technical staff in the Graduate School, accomplished its essential task of selecting the deserving awardees of the DDS and the DGSF in a timely way.  Going forward, it is advisable to return to meeting the traditional four times during the year, and, to that end, to improve the process by which meetings are scheduled, perhaps by scheduling the meetings farther in advance. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
