Disparities in School Discipline

Disparities in School Discipline covers discipline inequities in school districts. Zero tolerance policies were implemented in the 1990s after the Columbine shooting. Many students under strict zero-tolerance policies are punished without a second thought. Research has proven that this type of disciplinary procedure has an overall negative effect on students and a disproportionately negative effect on minorities.

This course is designed to help you think about how your personal and professional biases, including the perception of student behaviors, impact your decision-making; the degree to which current discipline practices increase educational inequities for multi-marginalized students; and solutions for more culturally responsive and overall equitable discipline practices for these students.
