Rebecca Shumway

Rebecca Shumway is an associate professor of History at UWM. Her focus as a historian is on West Africa and the trans-Atlantic slave trade with a particular focus on Ghana in the 18th and 19th centuries. Her first book, “The Fante and the Transatlantic Slave Trade” (Rochester 2011), was a finalist for the African Studies Association’s Herskovits book prize. She is co-editor of “Slavery and its Legacy in Ghana and the Diaspora” (Bloomsbury 2017) and several articles and book chapters related to the history of Ghana in the pre-colonial period. She teaches courses on African history, the African diaspora and the slave trade.
